A New York man has been charged with building a 200-pound bomb he allegedly planned to detonate on Washington's National Mall on Election Day.
Paul Rosenfeld, 56, appeared in federal court on Wednesday after law enforcement agents found an explosive device in his basement on Tuesday, according to a news release from the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
Rosenfeld was pulled over while driving, and in an interview with law enforcement agents, he admitted to purchasing black powder online, transporting it to his house in New York from New Jersey and constructing an explosive device in his basement, the news release said. He also said he has previously built smaller explosives to test the devices, according to the release.
A series of letters and text messages sent during August and September also show Rosenfeld intended to detonate the device as a way to bring attention to a political ideology called "sortition," according to the news release, which it describes as a "theory that advocates the random selection of government officials."
It was not immediately clear if Rosenfeld is being represented by an attorney.
"As alleged in the complaint, Paul M. Rosenfeld planned to detonate a large explosive to kill himself and draw attention to his radical political beliefs. Had he been successful, Rosenfeld's alleged plot could have claimed the lives of innocent bystanders and caused untold destruction," US Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement.

So he won't complain if he's given the death penalty, eh?
Remember the Tsarnaev brothers and their stripped out Roman Candles? It works very well
No, *but* conservative from me or many of my friends.
Straight up conservatives, never vote for a dem come hell or high water.
Pro-life, pro-second amendment, pro-God, pro-family and heterosexual, monogamous marriage.
You need to get out more.
Are you really that stupid to say there are no conservatives in NYC or surrounding areas. There is nothing you could ever say in the future that I won’t completely ignore. You sir/madam are a complete dumbass.
Proving yourself to be just as stupid as FReeper Celerity.
Useing the same logic as you two, what does that say about ALL Americans since Zer0 and Clinton were BOTH elected....twice!
“No, *but* conservative from me or many of my friends. Straight up conservatives, never vote for a dem come hell or high water.”
Its tough enough being openly conservative in NY without narrow minded jackazzes (supposedly on your own side) denying your very existance. In any case the opinion of some ignorant self-appointed judge of worthy conservatives isn’t worth sh*t.
You can say that again.
Black powder matters!
The guy must have watched the explosion scene from the movie “What About Bob”.
I reload all my own cartridges. I typically buy 8 pound containers of my favorite types of smokeless powders to save money. Pistol cartridges use only a few grains of powder a piece. There are 7000 grains in a pound. So eight pounds of my favorite, Hodgdon Titegroup goes a long way. Shotgun and rifle cartridges use a lot more powder per cartridge, but 8 pounds is still enough to load a heck of a lot of them. I don't remember ever buying more than two or three 8 pound kegs at a time... these days even that amount be enough to earn a little unwanted attention.
In the 60s my dad and grandfather used dynamite a lot to loosen big stumps when they were clearing land. I remember the first time they tried ANFO; they didn't pay close enough attention to the instructions that they were given. They had a large stubborn stump, there first couple of tries didn't go so well, so they used more than what was recommended. It was a big explosion and the stump went a long way into the air and came down on the hood of my grandfather's old pickup truck and smooshed it real good. He was very upset.
Bingo
I'm unimpressed.
When it comes to bombs, Michael Moore is at least a 500 lb one.
This would be an interesting transcript. I'd like to see what was between "do you know how fast you were going?" (or whatever) and "now let's talk about what you've bought on the internet."
I’m sincerely sorry about what happened to your relative, afterhoursarmory.
I had a legitimate duty of training with demo for a few years—mostly materials that were very stable and efficient. Yes, black powder can be very dangerous. Depends on what’s done with it. It’s relatively very bulky, smoky, dirty, flashy stuff, too.
And oh, yeah, BenLurkin, if in any kind of container (a building, for example), it can make a big blast, and with fairly flammable materials around, a fire. Black powder was notorious for unintentional, incidental fires in a few battles in the 1800s.
Black powder can also work very nicely and surprisingly accurately in a well built muzzle loader or even a cartridge similar to what was originally made for it. I’m too lazy to do all of that cleaning afterwards, though. ;-)
So you didn’t make it to the end of the first sentence in the excerpt. You win the Stupid Prize today.
This ABC article gives us some more background:
“authorities got a tip from an unidentified individual in Pennsylvania that Rosenfeld was allegedly communicating with about his plot.”
“Letters and text messages that Rosenfeld allegedly sent to the Pennsylvania tipster detailed his plot, authorities said in a criminal complaint.”
“Rosenfeld’s letters and text messages stated, in substance and in part, that he intended to 1) build an explosive device; 2) transport the explosive device to Washington D.C.; and 3) detonate this explosive device on November 6, 2018, on the National Mall in Washington D.C.”

That’s good enough for me. Straightforward from there, as they say:
- Check out the letters and texts, determine there’s something there
- Get Rosenfeld’s address, find out how what residence(s), car(s), sheds, &c he’s got
- Get a search warrant for explosives &c for his residence(s) and car(s)
- Stakeout at his house
- Follow him in his car
- Pull him over on one of the usual pretexts (2 miles over the speed limit, touching the “fog line”, rolling stop, etc.)
- Bluff him with “we know you’ve got something in the car” just to allow him to incriminate himself, which makes searches easier legally
- Search the car regardless of his answer
Smartphone speech impediment,
Sorry.
You are correct.
Sorry about that.
I was going to have the post pulled but have been busy and didn’t get to it yesterday.
I’ll take care of it.
Much more info. Thx.
My home state of PA is taken over by transplants from NJ and NY. Without those people, it would be fine. The home-grown Pennsylvanians are right wing as can be, and always have been.
That said, you’re right - PA is going downhill and I’m outta here. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that half of the licence plates on our streets here are NY and NJ
Trump used to be very liberal. Before running for office he didn’t change his heart, he changed his mind. The policies of the left were ruining the country that his kids and grandkids were born into.
And yes, all of the posters here from NYC and NYS fall into my category. I’m from the NE I know what I’m talking about here. They vote the most right-wing candidates that they can but they support conservative ideals always with a “But..” caveat. They are right wing but only in comparison to those around them.
