William & Mary Police are investigating after a statue of James Monroe was graffitied with the words “slave owner” late last month.
A crime log the school sent out Monday says a “non-student” was detained for writing on a statue at 1:36 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 outside Tucker Hall.
University spokeswoman Erin Zagursky said William & Mary Police have identified and spoken to a suspect, but no charges had been sought as of Monday afternoon.

Ah yes, the Democrats, the party of slavery. But maybe that cartoon version of American political party history as popularized by the likes of Dinesh D’Souza isn’t especially accurate.
George Washington was perhaps the largest slaveholder of his day, and if he was connected to any party it was the Federalists.
Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, all slave owners, weren’t Democrats, a party that didn’t yet exist. All were members of the Democratic-Republican Party, as was John Q Adams. The Democrat-Republican party dissolved into two rival parties, the National Republicans/Whigs and the Democrats. The Whigs also had a Federalist background.
Whigs were the major party that eventually would become the Republicans. Whig President Wm Henry Harrison was from a wealthy slaveowning family and had been pro-slavery as Indiana Territory Governor. Harrison died in office. His VP, President John Tyler owned slaves, and at the end of his life was elected to the Confederate Congress.
The next Whig President, Zachary Taylor, was also a slaveowner. Like Harrison he died soon in office, with his VP Millard Fillmore succeeding him. Finally with Fillmore we have a Whig who openly opposes slavery’s expansion, but despite that he signed the Fugitive Slave Act that helped drive the country to civil war. The Whigs collapsed at the end Fillmore’s Presidency in 1853.
So that leaves us with Democrat Presidents to examine. Jackson, the first Democrat, slaveowner. Van Buren of New York, not a slaveowner. And who later ran on the anti-slavery Free Soil Party ticket. James K Polk, slaveowner. Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire, not a slaveowner. James Buchanan of Pennsylvania, not a slaveowner. Maybe we should throw in John Tyler, who although elected with Harrison on the Whig ticket, had once been a Democrat. But then there is also Lincoln’s VP, and successor Andrew Johnson. What do you do with him? A slaveowner, elected with Lincoln on the National Union Party ticket.

A carpenter friend of mine has a boss who hails from Boston Southie. The Southie is kind of a rough, brusque character, who somewhat intimidates my pal. I said “You know, if you were a baseball fan you’d understand him better. Boston fans can be the rudest, most vulgar, jerk fans in baseball. They don’t mean anything by it, it’s just how they are. Especially the ones from Southie.” Speaking of Southie made me think of the great Boston school bussing war, so I mentioned that and for good measure tossed in “And Southies can be among the most racist people on earth”. Well that gave him a whole new admiration for his boss, because despite being half Mexican he isn’t exactly racially woke. But you know, it’s only in Dixie where racists are...

Prosecute the vandal, and sentence him to 100s of hours of community service, polishing historic structures, statues, etc.
This sort of attack on the American heritage is indefensible, coming from anyone living in one of our States, and expecting respect he is not willing to accord to the rest of us! (My opinion would be no different, were the vandal's target Massachusetts Senator Daniel Webster.)

This election strategy must be based on respect for our heritage; respect for the values--the aspiratory values--that once made us the envy of the world.
People who would besmirch James Monroe's memory, would just as logically force an insulting epithet into every Biblical reference to a Patriarch, holding bondsmen; to one of the Legendary Kings of Europe who held serfs. The writer may have an emotional problem with history, but it is a diversion from real issues, that will determine America's tomorrow--if any!!.

The 13th Mississippi was deployed on Carolina Street in the town in support of the 17th Mississippi along the river bank, sending ten sharpshooters to assist the 17th. After Federal forces crossed the river the regiment held Princess Anne Street for two hours. Captain G.L. Donald, who commanded several companied of the regiment, was commended by Colonel Carter. The regiment lost 7 men killed, 59 wounded and 14 captured. Captain J.L. Clark was killed by a solid shot early in the day, Captain T.W. Thurman was badly wounded and captured, and Lieutenant J.M. Stovall was missing and supposed dead.

My ancestor was one of the 14 captured in the battle and held at the Old Capitol Prison, currently the site of the Supreme Court. At some point he was paroled and returned to his unit in time for Gettysburg.
