On a balmy night in Austin, against the backdrop of the glittering high-rises of the citys booming downtown, Beto ORourke is laying out his audacious plan to change the face of Texas, and America.
In front of him, packed into an open-air park, a largely young crowd of 40,000 is thrumming with scarcely contained glee. Even in the liberal bubble of Austin they have never experienced anything like this: a Democrat seriously in the running for a Senate seat, vying to topple Ted Cruz, the Tea Party fanatic whom even fellow Republicans call Lucifer in the flesh.
We are not running against anything or any political party, ORourke tells his supporters. He punches his arm in the air like a pumped-up revolutionary while simultaneously wooing them with a crooners charms.
The message is relentlessly positive. The 45-year-old has tweaked Barack Obamas 2008 catchphrase Hope and change for darker times, so now it becomes: Hope over fear.
We are running for each other and this country that I love so much, he says, to a giant roar.

Really? What part of Texas are you in?
Up until a week or so ago, Cruz signs were as rare as hen's teeth in the DFW area, and Beto signs still outnumber his more than ten to one.
Not going to happen. Being objective, it’s about the same odds as John James unseating Stabenow in Michigan.
I broke down and put a Cruz sign in my yard, too. I dont like to do signs any more, but this election is too important.
His birth name, given by two totally Anglo sounding parents is Robert O'Rourke. Beto is his chosen name. Makes him sound Hispanic. The patriotic citizens of Mexican heritage are not going to like a fraud.
Cruze will win, but the troubling thing is that Cruz won by 16 points in 2012. Demographics, slowly but surely, becomes destiny.

i’m a cruz supporter but the guy has zero charisma
If he were a good politician he’d win by 16 again
Texas Democrats usually get more than 40% of the vote now.
Demographics are changing.
Ironically, he's running against a Republican named Raphael Eduardo Cruz.
WHat concert was he at that there were 40,00 kids there?
Some Texans on this board may tell me otherwise, but I know someone who has lived in the Dallas area for many years and he says the number of liberal Democrats who have taken up residence is noticeable. I hope that is not true. And I hope these polls that show Beto within striking distance are not true.
He makes my skin crawl. He lies and lies in his ads. He is 100% anti-American and anti-Constitutional.
NBC News was promoting an upcoming report on turning Texas blue. I had to laugh. Last two polls (post-Kavanaugh) had Cruz up 9 and 6 points respectively. This is the time when pollsters stop lying and start caring about their professional reputations.
In the Texas primaries, the Republicans had over 500,000 more voters than the Democrats. Cruz received almost 280,000 more votes than all of the Democrat candidates combined.
Unless the cemeteries empty for Beto or 500K Republicans stay home, I don’t see where Beto is going to get enough votes to win.
Stranger things have happened, so make sure you vote !
How many will not vote for him because “Beto” didn’t make it onto the ballot afterall.
Or as “Native American” as Lizard Warren
I do not like or trust Ted Cruz, but if I were a Texan, I would vote for
Cruz over that scum Beto in a heartbeat.
Betno. I was stationed in Texas in the Navy and have been back many times. He will lose by more than 20 points.
No.

Texas is overrun by Californians.
