It's especially impressive when you consider that Bolsonaro had to conduct most of his campaign from an ICU thanks to a deranged leftist would-be assassin.

I'm very happy for Bolsonaro and his prospects for moving Brazilian politics in the right direction. If he keeps the 46% that he won in the first round, he only needs to pick up a little over 4% to win the general election. However, given the prospects for voter fraud in a country whose corruption makes our sleazy political process looks squeaky clean, that might seem too optimistic.

Socialist = Stalinist
Liberal = Marxist
Moderate = Socialist
Conservative = Liberal

It's also quite telling that "Far Right" or "Ultra-Right" is a common political buzzword, but you almost never hear "Far Left" or "Ultra-Left" being used as a pejorative to describe any political candidate, even when talking about actual, openly Marxist figures.

Pretty accurate translation guide. Bolsonaro seems to be a right-of-center populist, which is "far-right" in mainstream media speak.

The media generally won't even USE the term liberal or left-wing. To them, every political battle involves a "moderate" vs. an "extreme right-winger". Supporting abortion-on-demand and voting with Planned Parenthood 100% of time makes you a "social moderate" in their bubble. For example, witness Mark Kirk. They NEVER referred to him as socially liberal or left-wing, despite the fact his views on social issues were identical to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In fact, Gisburg HERSELF is referred to as a "moderate" in the media.

Kirk was ALWAYS called a "social moderate and fiscal conservative", when it reality he was far-left on social issues, and a squishy centrist on fiscal issues.

So any time Latin America gets a non-socialist in power, its "far right" according to the mainstream media.

A good example was the Hillary Clinton vs. Bernie Sanders primary. The media normally doesn't like to use the term liberal or left-wing, but was forced to do so because Sanders publicly identifies as a proud socialist and said so many times. Sanders wasn't even a real Democrat, but a leader of a marxist third party movement running as a Democrat solely to get ballot access. So they identified him as the liberal or left-wing candidate in that case. Hillary Clinton, who was NEVER a "moderate" Democrat and always been a strong promoter of hard-left "progressive" policies, was the "more moderate, mainstream Democrat" candidate.

So the media portrayed that election as a liberal Democrat vs. moderate Democrat, when it reality is was an OPENLY Marxist/Stalinist candidate who wanted to turn the USA into the 1930s Soviet Union vs. a socialist Democrat who just wanted "typical" socialist policies like Universal Health Care.
