(CNN) -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Republican Party will still challenge Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia despite his help confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
"We appreciate his vote for Judge Kavanaugh," the Kentucky senator said Sunday on CBS's "Face The Nation." "I think it was the right thing to do. But we're trying to win seats."
While McConnell said he appreciates Manchin's support, he also pointed out that he is "still a Democrat."
McConnell, like other Republicans, has harped on what he calls a "mob" of left-wing protesters as an issue in the wake of the Kavanaugh confirmation fight and with the midterm elections approaching. President Donald Trump made similar statements Saturday, saying at a rally in Topeka, Kansas, that "(i)n their quest for power, the radical Democrats have turned into an angry mob."
Hailing from a state that Trump won overwhelmingly and where Kavanaugh is favored, Manchin's reelection chances next month could get a boost from his vote for the judge. He came out in support of Kavanaugh on Friday, releasing a statement immediately after Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, another key swing vote, said in a lengthy Senate floor speech that she too would back the nominee.
In so doing, Manchin, who also voted for Trump's first Supreme Court selection, Neil Gorsuch, became the only Senate Democrat to break ranks with his party.

Manchin has to go, so does Sherrod Brown and Bob Casey. I wish the polling was better than what it is.
“he also pointed out that he is “still a Democrat.”
Yup. Owe him nothing except thanks dude’. He only voted to save his own ass.
He can be a minority in the Senate and hope for big gains in 2020.
Ha! Now the MoveOn Soros goons have pulled their funding...and WV Dems are going to stay home over Manchin's betrayal.
SUCKER!
It would behoove him to switch parties.
“We’re trying to win seats”
LMAO...Mcscrotum and ryan have been trying to scuttle Trump and his agenda since he was elected.
“McConnell Says GOP Congress Will Not Even Try to Fund Trump’s Border Wall Until After Election”
Manchin will not switch parties. He has convinced himself he can be the next Bill Clinton minus the zipper problem & harpy wife. At some point from the wreckage of the Rat party he will present himself as the “safe sane” centrist choice. I think he’s fooling himself! This is not 1992, the “political middle” is mostly gone. Triangulation Dick Morris style will not work! He could switch, but he doesn’t bring much anymore and who would trust him?
He’d be just another RINO. DEFEAT him and send him home.
Where was this attitude in the Alabama Senate race?
Exactly right.
ONE vote, as important was it was, is not enough to negate a whole career, and what with midterms here and his seat up for reelection, he's going to have an awfully hard time convincing people any change is genuine, and not some political ploy to save his butt and then turn on the electorate.
Dont expect anything in the upper Midwest to go D in the senate races..
Other than perhaps Manchin and MN..
The messaging the GOP keeps using here is terrible. They are electorally incompetent.
Exactly. The rinos and neverTrumpers came out of the woodwork to make sure that Moore didn’t win that seat.
The conclusion: They preferred Doug Jones.
Ever since Manchin boosted his campaign by announcing he would vote for Kavanaugh, the Morrisey campaign has been airing ads showing Manchin’s relation to Mylan Pharm. This is nothing but a last ditch, scorched earth effort on the GOP candidate’s part. People in WV were well aware of this relationship, but are ALSO pro-Trump. Mylan Pharm is a major employer in a part of WV that is heavily RAT and I can’t see these ads doing anything but adding to Manchin’s lead.
Still gonna vote for him, but IMO Morrisey is done.
Let him skate. We have easier targets and frankly Manchin should not be one.

Yertle, Lindsey Granite, and the Lawnmower (Grassley) have been exceptional.
It’s like “Lord of the Rings” when Gandalf releases the king from that evil spirit and he kicks ass.
For Manchin to have bucked Schumer would have cost Manchin in terms of getting on Senate committees, etc. So you are right. Manchin voted for Kavanaugh in order to save his own political ide.
Is anyone knowledgeable about the Pennsylvania senate race between Lou Barletta and Dim incumbent Casey? I know Casey has a lead in the polls and we hear little about that race. I’ve also read that Mitch and the Republicans might be writing that one off and offering little or no support to Barletta.
Anyone know if that’s because Barletta has little or no chance, or is it because Mitch and others do not like Barletta’s strong immigration enforcement stances? And will the president give Barletta a visit and rally?
