Police identified the man who opened fire on officers in Florence, South Carolina, Wednesday as 74-year-old Fred Hopkins, a Vietnam veteran and former attorney.
Breitbart News reported that one officer was killed and six others injured when Hopkins opened fire. ABC 7 identified the deceased officer as 52-year-old Terrence Carraway, a 30-year veteran of the Florence Police Department.
Authorities said the gunman, Fred Hopkins, is a Vietnam veteran who opened fire as officers came to the house to serve a search warrant. The warrant did not pertain to Hopkins; rather, it centered on an accusation that a 27-year-old person at the home sexually assaulted a foster child who lives in the home.
Law enforcement indicated that children were in the home at the time that Hopkins opened fire and that those children were held hostage for a time.
WMBF reported that Hopkins suffered a head wound and was subsequently hospitalized, and the 27-year-old subject of the search warrant was shot as well.
Florence County Sheriffs Office Deputy Chief Glenn Kirby said Hopkins had the upper hand in the shootout: The way this suspect was positioned, his view of fire was several hundred yards. So he had an advantage. The officers couldnt get to the ones who were down.
Hopkins pinned down officers, and an armored personnel carrier was called in to retrieve the wounded.

thank God i don’t have to wear a tie anymore but i still need a belt to keep my pants up 8^)
The Dallas mass police shooter was ex-military and the media focused on that.
Sorry. You are absolutely right. My clumsy way of saying or trying to say that there were people deployed to VN who didn’t see combat.
Hubby calls them...REMF’ers. Rear Echelon Mother F_____’ers. He says they are always the first to claim some kind of injury or PTSD. Hubby was in the army in VN. Special Forces or what was know then as Green Berets.
How about being appalled that this guy murdered a cop while protecting an alleged child-molester?
“REMFers...are always the first to claim some kind of injury or PTSD.”
Yup, and the Green Beret still water runs deep guys are the last to speak, hardest to find, and hardest to go get help.
Hubby and I have been married 35 years and hes never talked about Vietnam. He still speaks Vietnamese in his sleep occasionally.
No words except give him a big hug for me and tell him I said welcome home.
I love hugging tough guys. When my son was coming home from the stan the first Marine I saw in the visitor parking lot was an MP. I told him I was going to give him a hug and he stood still as stone. I still laugh at that. It was probably against regulations but I’M A FORMER MARINE MOM, YO. And Gold Star sister, Nam, army. so, I didn’t care.
