This is Etta from 1999. It’s an approach combining the Flamingos’ dreamy take with a step away from the 6/8 time signature. She’s past her prime, but there is a gritty undertone to the song.

Rod was one of several acts who discovered that the best cure for a flagging career was the Great American Songbook. Rod did an exceptional job, and it opened up an entirely new area for him. This 2008 version returns to the 2/4 fox trot tempo of the original.

Barry went from the gay bathhouses of New York, where he teamed with Bette Midler, to the heavy reverb ballads of the Seventies. I’ll never forgive him for turning one of Chopin’s shortest piano pieces into an eight minute monstrosity that is probably still played nonstop in Hell. This is from 2010, and it’s based on the Flamingos’ version minus the reverb.
