India's Supreme Court has ruled that the country's controversial biometric identity scheme is constitutional and does not violate the right to privacy.
However the court limited the scope of the Aadhaar scheme, saying it could not be compulsory for bank accounts, mobile connections or school admissions.
The world's largest biometric ID database covers welfare and tax payments and access to social services.
More than a billion Indians have already been enrolled.
Many don't have other forms of identification - only 65 million own a passport and 200 million have a driving licence.
Those who enrolled in Aadhaar received a unique 12-digit identification number after submitting their fingerprints and retina scans. About 30 petitioners went to court to argue that the scheme infringed Indians' privacy.

The data collection points are already underway. Some, possibly, may not even realize what they’re doing. Sure, technology is cool. Until the Lawless One is passed off as a “messiah” when he’s really the “anti-messiah”.

India has shown how a massive operation is undertaken. And they could speed it up, too, if they wanted.
It’s just how many data collection points they put out there.
And everybody’s phone has a camera. Think how easy....to “register” for the system, citizen.
Of course, they’ll have to visit an official facility for the Mark.

Why did they bother with a number? It can't be used for authentication, they will need to be fingerprinted or retinal scanned again to prove their identity since anyone can steal or guess a number. But I suspect they will use the number despite the lack of security so ID theft will be easier than ever.
..perhaps in the near future some invisible form of QR code which can only be seen/read by certain kinds lasers—from the government...
MICR tattoos are real, as well.
I was in banking in the 1980’s when our company was testing and installing MICR readers for checks. Boy was that a long time ago. Feels like a different lifetime.
