Ive been saying all week that you could expect another late hit on Brett Kavanaugh over the weekend, and right on schedule, we have the New Yorker story, which, as Paul and Scott have already noted, is pretty thin gruel. But it was absolutely necessary for the left to come up with a story like this, for several reasons.
First, one thing that is true in virtually all cases of sexual predation (think Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein) is that there is a pattern of behavior, and usually several other women stepping forward. This trait was conspicuously absent until now. We know that the mediaand no doubt large portions of the Democratic establishmenthave been trolling feverishly to find another woman with a story. This is the best they can doa hazy, indirect, recovered memory?
Second, even a story as thin as thiseven if it falls apart upon further scrutinyreinforces a subtle aspect of the leftist narrative against Kavanaugh, which repeats the argument made against the wholly innocent Duke lacrosse players a decade agonamely, that Kavanaugh, as a product of Georgetown Prep and Yale, is a product of privilege, which for the collective-guilt left these days means you must atone for the sins of your class. (Recall that something like 80 Duke faculty members signed a declaration attesting to the guilt of the lacrosse team based wholly on this ideological ground.) Id love to be able to do a confidential survey of Georgetown Prep (and Holton Arms, Dr. Fords perp school) about how they feel about the lefts sweeping attack on the supposedly reprobate culture of their schools. Alumni of those schools cant be thrilled at being dragged into the mud in this way. (I note that some lefties are mocking Kavanaugh as some kind of nerd for having his calendar from 1982. Well it turns out I have one too, though I dont know where it is at the momentlikely in a storage box in the garage. Back in 1982 I was a serious runnertow marathons and two triathlons that year plus a lot of road racesand my wall calendar is where I made my daily notations of my distance and training schemes, as well as travel and even movies I went to. Ill confess to being a nerd.)
Third, I think this entire late gambit has been one huge bluff by the Democrats, intending to intimidate Republicans into dropping Kavanaugh. I dont think Dr. Ford has any intention of testifying before the Judiciary Committee this week, and I expect come Wednesday well get a self-serving announcement attacking Chairman Grassley and the Senate Republicans for bullying and creating a hostile environment in which Dr. Ford cannot safely tell her story. At that point, Grassley should call for an immediate committee vote to proceed with the nomination. This latest story in just another attempt to keep the intimidation fires alive. Fine: I say lets call the bluff and request that Deborah Ramirez, the source of the new allegation, present herself for sworn testimony before the committee.
Grassley hasn’t caved at all. He has postponed the committee vote because he knew these additional allegations would come out right before the vote was held anyway. He had to wait until these were out in the open because they’d be far more effective if they hit the news right before a vote.
forgo the committee - go straight to full Senate, put red-state Democrats on the record now.
Let’s suppose this seat on the SCOTUS goes unfilled for some time (like 6 years). If a 9th Circuit Court opinion is appealed to the Supreme Court and the vote is 4-4, does the 9th Circuit opinion stand? If so, that might be the Democrat’s end game? Fill up the SCOTUS docket with wacko rulings from liberal courts and hope for 4-4 ties?
Just think about it ... you kill two birds with one stone, and he’s just a placeholder on the Supreme Court. The howls of outrage from the Democrats will be an indication of how badly this works for them.
Yabut this guy is so Deep State, I’d expect him to “grow” into new liberal opinions.
Sessions can suck it.
Lots of comments tonight. A few of them are offering suggestions for a way ahead or finding more information to inform everyone on this forum. Most comments are in full blame mode, and most of those are blaming the Republicans. I see the evil hand of Democrats at the bottom of all of this and I think that the blame belongs clearly on them. But, that’s just me.
The McMartin Preschool hoax in Manhattan Beach CA.
Lives were ruined based on NOTHING and it was the most expensive Investigation and Trial in History up to that point.
Every day the Allegations got crazier and crazier.
Sessions is no more “Deep State” than Kavanaugh, dude. Look at their backgrounds.
Any Republican Senator who doesn’t see this as a political stall tactic and hit-job against a decent man doesn’t belong in the Senate.
End this Chuck or we all have to pay the price.
Have they commented on this new “allegation”?
Republicans and Democrats are merely two sides of the same coin.
You can find stuff like that at any school if you look hard enough and read things with that interpretation in mind. The Democrats are doing the same thing with Georgetown Prep. You have to bear in mind that when high schoolers talk, there's usually much exaggeration.
I hope Grassley shows some leadership and courage.
This is a war to the death, in a political sense. You have to chose sides. I chose the Republicans. If you don’t chose a side, then you can join the clueless masses who don’t care as long as they get plenty of free stuff.
Yeah, right, and the Lions have a better chance of beating the Patriots......Oh wait, they frickin' beat them?
What does he do -- go on living in a leafy Beltway suburb and stay on the D.C. Court of Appeals? Nope -- that ain't going to happen. These allegations are outlandish enough -- and so public -- that his career is over UNLESS he is confirmed.
That’s what sucks, they really don’t deserve my support, but you’re right, what choice do I have?
What a country!
The democrat brownshirts are coming? This adds an interesting twist.
That's been the plan of the GOP all along. This way it will look like President Trump's defeat, not a defeat of the Republican party. Remember, the GOP was more than happy to sell the "R" brand to DJT during the primaries....never thinking he could win the nomination. After he did, the GOP neither wanted nor expected him to win the Presidency and since he's been in office they've continued to do anything they could to thwart his agenda.
The GOP is as much the cause of this horror show as the RATS!
