The blind pianist mixes Harry Warren with Debussy as accompaniment to Michael Feinstein, who makes the song relevant for the current age. Feinstein was a student of Ira Gershwin in his final years, and it shows.

Greetings & Salutations!

The Guess Who - No Time

Returned from a trip to northern New Mexico. Las Vegas, Taos, RedRiver and then back thru Amarillo (Palo Duro Canyon), Lubbock and Post where I was born. The colors on the Aspen are starting to pop. Beautiful. Stayed in the Tommy Lee Jones suite at the Plaza hotel in Las Vegas - had a wonderful time there. Taos has jumped the shark but Red River made up for it. Put close to 2000 miles on the Rav4. Went thru Sweetwater and was amazed at the sheer number of wind turbines in the area. Hope everyone is well - good to be back home in Kerrville. Even the cat was glad to see me when I picked her up from the Vet/kitty hotel. ;o)

FOOTLIGHT PARADE: “SHANGHAI LIL”

There is a tendency to remember James Cagney from his gangster roles at Warner Brothers, but he started as a song-and-dance man in vaudeville. Here he gets to strut his stuff and try out his tenor voice on baritone vocal lines.

Harry’s love for opera shows in this ensemble chorus featuring a black man and a group of drugged out floozies practically falling out of their costumes. Will Hays must have had a coronary. It looks like something out of Leonard Pinth-Garnell’s “Bad Opera.”

Under his contract with Warner Brothers, Harry also provided songs for the Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes product lines at Warner’s animation division. One classic cartoon, not available at You Tube, features a dead-on impersonation of W. C. Fields, who was under contract at Universal, singing this song with some hilarious asides. “I can scramble an egg, I can open a safe.” This is Bob Crosby sounding like Bing.
