Victor Davis Hanson: Are we on the verge of civil war?
washingtontimes.com ^ | Victor Davis Hanson

Americans keep dividing into two hostile camps.

It seems the country is back to 1860 on the eve of the Civil War, rather than in 2018, during the greatest age of affluence, leisure and freedom in the history of civilization.

The ancient historian Thucydides called the civil discord that tore apart the fifth-century B.C. Greek city-states “stasis.” He saw stasis as a bitter civil war between the revolutionary masses and the traditionalist middle and upper classes.

Something like that ancient divide is now infecting every aspect of American life.

Americans increasingly are either proud of past U.S. traditions, ongoing reform and current American exceptionalism, or they insist that the country was hopelessly flawed at its birth and must be radically reinvented to rectify its original sins.

No sphere of life is immune from the subsequent politicization: Not movies, television, professional sports, late-night comedy or colleges. Even hurricanes are typically leveraged to advance political agendas.

Economy is too good for a civil war
People enjoying life don’t want to fight a war

Let the Democrats back into power and see how quickly that economy changes...

“Yes indeed, in large vulnerable cities that could not last a week without food deliveries from Red territories...without the red territory electric grid and oil and gas deliveries.”

And besides, they would take advantage of the situation to accelerate their killing of each other.

Why do you think the lefty flagburners are so desperately wanting illegal immigration? They know that native-born flagburners are slowly being aborted, gayed, and family-planned out of existence.
Not in the inner cities.

This notion that conservatives are having these giant biblical families while liberals are aborting all themselves is mostly BS. My wife and I have four kids but we are definitely outliers. Most of the productive taxpaying families that we know have a single child, -or none at all. They can't afford them. The parasite class, on the other hand, breeds like rabbits.

During a CW2 the cities would be isolated from food and power. There would be no jobs and active recruitment for the Blue military. All the illegals will melt away, they are not here to fight a war... The Gimmedats would be busy steeling everything that wasn't nailed down. Lib whites would largely be ineffectual.

"I believe so. There is a peaceful alternative - one that was not taken in 1775 or 1861. Peaceful secession. We have grown apart. Everybody sees it. Even if one side were to ultimately prevail, it would only be after paying a frightful cost and then they’d be stuck trying to manage millions who despised them and who were looking to undermine them at every turn. Rational people should be able to see that that is a “victory” not worth having. Some states will need to split while other entire states go in their entirety. Done peacefully and on the basis that government derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed, this need be no bad thing. Ultimately, everybody would be much happier."

What you describe would be great, but the Left is pathologically unable to mind their own business and let others lead their lives in their own way. They have an insatiable drive for power and control. In many ways they are like metastatic cancer and they would never voluntarily agree to a peaceful separation.

No, the fundamental question is: "Who controls the military?"

As someone currently serving in today's military, the notion that we are all monolithically conservative Trump supporters is absolute fiction. There are plenty of service members of all ranks who voted for Hillary Clinton.

The military from top to bottom is just as divided as the rest of the country. During the past decade or so the military became a jobs program. The warrior ethos has been tempered. A lot of people are there just for the Tricare benefits.

I think we know what they are capable of.
We have been witnessing it for how long now?
Illegals, Schools, corruption.

I think the left knows what we might be capable of,too.
Right now the left is NOT playing on a level playing field.
They play dirty...that is who they are.
But we know that.
They get what everything they want in a underhanded way.
We mostly try to play fair but there are limits.

You're right about that. That we're a nation headed towards civil war is something that mostly only people who spend time discussing politics are considering.

I'd bet that if I walked down the street and asked a random sample of 20 people if they knew who Brett Kavanaugh was, only 10 could answer correctly.

Most of America isn't paying attention to any of this stuff. There's a roof over their head, food in the fridge, gas in the car, and TV to watch. They stopped discussing politics at work because of the animosity it caused so now they talk about other stuff.

But he also describes the urban dwellers, whatever their ilk, venturing out of the cities to take what they want, after they’ve taken everything in the city. And that is where they will meet the resistance or their Maker, which ever comes first.

There is a reason why investments and stocks weren’t taught throughout the curriculums and grades in public school as math, history and english were taught. A good understanding of the economy gives the citizens waaaay too much power for the elites in charge.

The media are fifth columnists. They should be the first to go.

Couldn't agree with you more. Get back to just reporting the news instead of fanning the flames of liberalism and this country would settle down "overnight".

I cannot substantially argue the point but believe that progressive enemies occupy the territory from city center to say a 25 mile radius at least.

I don't trust the outcome between subsets of progressives theoretically engaged within a war within a war.

To your point, I chuckled at this one:

Power grid (which we mostly control) would take care of that.”

Um, wrong. The IBEW has the grids (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). Right now, they have it good under Trump so are for the most part content and staying pretty mellow. That could change rather quickly given their viewpoint.

This shows how out of touch many Freepers are with reality. The US's standard of living has been falling for decades for the lower 50%. We have afluenza on Free Republic.

The whole point is the upper part of society is doing ok/great under gloBULLism and the FAIL TO REALIZE WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE BOTTOM.
