Senate Republicans on Monday signaled they are ready to move forward with a vote on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh if the woman accusing him of sexual assault, Christine Blasey Ford, fails to show up to a hearing on Monday.
Republicans believe Fords surprise refusal to testify at the special hearing, where she and Kavanaugh have been invited to appear as the only two witnesses, has given them an upper hand in a public relations battle with Senate Democrats.
It has emboldened the GOP to press ahead with a vote as soon as next week, despite Fords stunning allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when the two were teenagers at a 1980s high school party.
Theres going to be a vote right away, said one senior Senate Republican aide.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) late Wednesday in a letter to committee Democrats rejected calls to delay Mondays hearing. He also said Ford had until 10 a.m. Friday to say whether she would appear at the hearing.
If Ford does not change her mind and does not testify, however, many believe a public hearing could be canceled. Allowing it to go forward with just Kavanaugh would allow Democrats to turn him into a piñata.
Democrats on the panel, including potential White House candidates Sens. Cory Booker (N.J.) and Kamala Harris (Calif.), could ask embarrassing questions to Kavanaugh about his drinking or sexual history.
Ford alleges that the assault happened at a party 36 years ago where Kavanaugh was stumbling drunk, which has put a spotlight on references to heavy drinking and partying in Kavanaughs high school yearbook profile.
What would be the purpose of the hearing if Dr. Ford doesnt want to respond? Grassley told The Hugh Hewitt Show Tuesday.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), a pivotal swing vote, predicted the hearing would not go forward if only Kavanaugh is set to testify.
I think that would be a real disservice to both Judge Kavanaugh and Professor Ford, she said in an interview with WVOM, the Voice of Maine.
In a political fight playing out weeks before a midterm election where suburban women voters are expected to be critical, the fight has risks and huge stakes for both parties.
Liberals are battling to block a pivotal vote from being placed on the Supreme Court, while Republicans are worried about looking insensitive in the me too era.
Republicans have been careful to say they want to hear from Ford, whether it is part of a public hearing, a closed session, or privately before a bipartisan team of committee investigators. Grassley has offered to send committee staff to California, where Ford lives, to interview her about her allegations against Kavanaugh.
President Trump has avoided any controversial statements about Ford, and on Wednesday emphasized that he wants to hear from her. I really want to see her. I really would want to see what she has to say, the president told reporters from the White House.
Without Fords testimony, GOP aides say Democrats have little leverage to further delay Kavanaughs nomination.
Three GOP centrists, whose votes appeared to be in doubt, on Wednesday seemed to be shifting back towards Kavanaugh given Fords decision to not testify.
Collins is seen as the most important of the three members.
Were talking about a jury of one: Susan Collins. Whatever Collins does, [Sen.] Lisa Murkowski [R-Alaska] will do too. The signals from Collins are: I want to hear from her, this is a good offer, were being flexible, said a second GOP aide.
Democrats say they havent been coordinating with Ford but instead are giving her space to decide on her own whether she wants to testify.
An aide said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) has not been in touch with Ford since Monday, when Republicans announced they would hold a hearing next week to examine her allegation.
Another Democratic source said Ford is driving the decision about whether to testify and how, leaving Senate Democrats largely powerless to decide whether she shows up on Monday or if there even is a hearing.
A third Democratic source said, she hasnt made up her mind and its not clear shes not going to come forward, adding no one really knows.
While most Republicans have sought to avoid direct criticism of Ford, there were more signs of frustration on Wednesday.
Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, accused Ford and her lawyers of moving the goal post, referring to her willingness to testify. Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas), who is also on Judiciary, complained, The problem is Dr. Ford cant remember when it was, where it was, or how it came to be.
While Republicans want to move forward with Kavanaugh, Democrats say they are rushing the process, an argument that could be buttressed by a vote next week.
If Republicans go ahead and schedule the hearing and vote without [Ford] it shows a complete lack of integrity and sincerity of the part of the Republicans but we have known from the very beginning their view of this nomination has been win at all costs, said Nan Aron, the president of Alliance for Justice, a liberal advocacy group opposed to Kavanaughs nomination.
Aron pointed to the political backlash that followed Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomass confirmation in 1991, when Republicans ignored allegations that he sexually harassed Anita Hill. The following year, four women Democrats were elected to the Senate and Bill Clinton won the presidency in what became known as the Year of the Woman.
Brian Fallon, the executive director of Demand Justice, another advocacy group opposed to Kavanaugh, warned that the politics of Kavanaughs confirmation have changed and the GOP will pay a political price with plowing ahead.
The more that they push forward in defiance of this womans very credible claims, the more they risk setting off an intense voter backlash like the one that ensued after Anita Hill in 1991, he said. The historical precedent here looms large in terms of 1992 producing a wave of women elected to Congress based on an outrage that began with the handling of the Anita Hill hearings.
No, they’ll accuse her of hateful racial slurs at some black students or black associates from the past! Bank on it!
Yep! They’re NOT DoNE YET!!! FREAKIN EVIL NEVER Sleeps!! I guarantee it!
So credibleclaims wasn't selling and now they are pusing "very" credible claims. When do we supersize this?
Lather...rinse...repeat....
Your right about this. Donald Trumps are very rare. We are lucky to have him.
He sees the Democrats for what they have become.
That's OK with me, although I don't think it is true. But, putting Kavanaugh on the bench will probably do more harm to the left's agenda over time than just holding both houses of congress will do in 2018 or 2020.
They better ALL vote for confirmation... I'm damn sick and tired of this bogus BS.
the old Soviet commissar strategy. No retreat. Hold guns to them. If they turn around, shoot them.
You ask every woman out there with a son if they really want their sons life ruined because some woman who claim he groped her when he was 17. Especially since she cant eemember where or when
Demand Justice must be the group that sent out the talking points to the press telling them to stick “credible” into the reporting whenever they could.
The more the rats fight, the better the pick for the nominee.
1. Ford wants a full FBI investigation before she testifies in Congress. Ain't happening, lady.
2. She is really afraid of a possible perjury charge against her because her testimony will be under oath in front of Congress.
As I have stated many times the Democrat Party is self-destructing itself internally. Desperate people do desperate things....period. There is no real leader in the entire Democrat Party.
They will lose the Kavanaugh battle, they will lose the DOJ/FBI battle, Obama & Clinton will be fingered as the culprits that led this game to take down Trump illegally and many other Democrats will go down as a result of other Democrat scum & vermin, dropping dime on each other.
The Republicans will hold the House and gain 6-12 Senate seats in the Mid-Term Elections. The much talked about female vote will not matter at all. As a matter of fact the pollsters and pundits will have much egg on their faces when the demographics of how American women voted is brought to light, after the election is concluded.
The Democrat Party is lost and adrift at sea...rudderless steered by Obama who only knows and uses the word “I” 5000 times in a 45 minute speech and Clinton who’s dreams of power are a figment of her twisted imagination.
Let’s put it this way.....strategic thinking is not a strong suit of the current Democrat Party. Anyone with half a brain would have nixed the Kavanaugh caper as a lost cause. That was not the fight to fight!!! After November 6, 2018....the Democrat Party will be politically weak and impotent for many years to come. Trump, who they continue to bad mouth and mock endlessly, beats ‘em single time. Bottom line, Trump is a chess player and a master and that...and, all the Democrats can muster is checkers on the checker board.
Like my old boss used to say to me “Son....if you are born dumb, but, think you are smart, you are in big trouble, but, if you are born Dumb and know it, you will do just fine on the Merry-Go-Round of life.” “And, if you think you are a legend in your own time, you most likely are only a legend in your own mind”!!! Wise words from a very successful man.
Excellent. Give her a drop dead due date to show up or shut up.
I’ve said this in another thread but I’m going to say it again. I think Ford will claim to be in the hospital from exhaust and thus excuse her from going before congress. Dems will try to use this to delay the vote and when that doesn’t work they will claim the GOP hates women and are also all rapists.
You know Triple E I often disagree with you ala Sessions but you sound like lots of fun. I hope your prayers are answered.
I know but it is their last chance to play the victim
Christine had just started to recover from being groped 36 years ago, and now it’s like she is being groped again!
