Over 2,500 medical students and healthcare professionals at over 30 leading medical centers held events on Monday urging the public to treat "gun violence" as a public health crisis, The Mercury News reported.
The events were part of Scrubs Addressing the Firearms Epidemic (SAFE), a non-partisan action co-founded by Stanfords Professor of Medicine Dr. Dean Winslow, a Republican, and fourth year medical student Sarabeth Spitzer, a Democrat. Winslow is a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and flight surgeon who was deployed six times to Iraq and Afghanistan.
At Stanford, healthcare professionals spoke about the health risk associated with guns, the gun epidemic and trauma care. At the University of California San Francisco, two panels discussed California's firearms laws and recommended ways to talk to patients about firearm access, safety, and risk.
According to Spain, it's difficult for medical professionals to get involved in the gun debate because of the political nature surrounding firearms.
If this were any other public health problem, we wouldnt stand for it. But its such a hot button political topic that we lose the ability to talk about it," Spain told The Mercury News. Weve been a little slow. Were politically adverse. Our mission is education and research. This is advocacy.
Medical associations and groups have become involved in the gun control debate. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association are just a few who have thrown their hat into the arena.

ESAD asshats. You’re not taking away our one tool for personal protection. Don’t like it; get the eff out of my country.
Just ban DemocRats from owning firearms and the murder rate will go down 80% or more.
Theres more old semi-automatics than there are old doctors. Sorry Willie had to borrow the phrase.
Say when.......Im your huckleberry
Bugger off
Oh bugger off!
You get a total B-I-N-G-O on THAT...
No, wait ... it WASN'T! It was a gazillion times worse than it is now. Even in the worst neighborhoods in Chicago now. They'd raid your village, kill you and sell your kids as slaves.
Seaplaner: It's time to ban intentionally false, deceptive, anti-Constructional, fear mongering and politically obedient fake gun statistics.
(Problem solved.)
You think it is bad now, just start a civil war trying to disarm us!
And i have always wondered that if there were no high capacity semis what would happen if the bad guys started toting 357/44s and actually learned to shoot instead of spray?
I think the death rate might actually go up
Is it time for socialized medicine, doc, wherein all doctors are paid the same and the government assigns when and where they work and how many hours per week?
Don’t even want to hear about your “Constitutional rights,” doc.
Hospitals. It’s where visitors go to die.
Time to cut medical doctor’s pay until they get their heads out of their arses.
To think I used to respect Stanford. Sigh.
More guns in private hands than ever, fewer gunshot victims than ever.
they are going to do to guns what they’ve just done to opioids- make it a ‘national health crisis’. This is the direction the left are going to try to take because they saw it work with big tobacco, then with opioids- and now guns- Look for the left to really really hype the issue and claim it’s ‘for the children’ yet ignore the much more dangerous things like swimming pools, 5 gallon pails, toothbrushes, illegals, etc that take the lives of kids far more than guns do
Iatrogenic deaths in the usa kill significantly more people each year than firearms. Lets ban doctors and hospitals by this logic.
Cars and all forms of road transportation kill more people each year than firearms. Lets van all vehicle traffic everywhere.
I mean, if it saves just ONE life...
