ATLANTA (CBS46) - The latest poll has Republican Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams in a statistical dead heat in the race for Governor of Georgia.
The big poll -- who likely voters would vote for -- shows it's a tie, for now, so we asked two strategists to look at what the related polling results show to gauge where the race is going.
Kemp and Abrams may be polling neck-and-neck in the latest UGA Survey Research Center Poll for WSB-TV, but Gov. Nathan Deal is casting a long shadow.
Democratic strategist Tharon Johnson said he's not surprised at the fact that the margin between both candidates is 0.4 percent.
"We've seen similar polls four years ago," said Tharon Johnson.

My mind keeps going to how wrong all the polls were when Trump got elected....doesn’t keep me from worrying though.
“Yes of course they are tied, now by a good boy and eat your peas so you can earn an extra fruit cup tonight.”
This is total BS.
I sure made errors in my comment! Fingers too big for phone keyboard.
I do not live in Atlanta..thank God. I live north suburbs where northerners moving here has changed the gov from dem to gop. I’d be very surprised if this socialist could win. I’d be setback.
Whether it’s a bullcrap poll or not, it is telling us something, as someone that lives in Georgia. In the South’s, Midwest’s and Mountain states zeal to attract business, “well paying business”, they went after the tech companies. Who in turn, bring with them liberal, hipster tech people. And those types don’t buy F150s, deer hunt, own/shoot guns, or put their hand over their heart for the Anthem. The folks from those states, for the most part, didn’t get those jobs, people from other states did.
Facebook is putting a data center in Covington, Ga. There aren’t going to be too many people from Covington, working there, I promise. It’s going to be folks from out of the state and they’ll all live in Decatur, at first. Then move because they got tired of the commute.
Throw in the movie industry, probably the most hypocritical of all of them. They love to hand their hats on the Liberal/Leftist Door, but cannot stand paying those union wages anymore so they went looking for more profitable places. Which isn’t a knock on them, per se, but, as well all know, shut up unless you can, put up.
The 6th Congressional District, formerly held by Tom Price. They have an active operation to turn that into a Dem seat. How are they doing it? All the northern liberal, transplants are moving there. Of course, the schools are good, property values are high. Schools filled w/ mostly white kids, Indian kids and/or whose parents are in the US on H1B visas.
At the end of the day, due to population densities, the cities decide who runs the place. New York is actually pretty Conservative, but NYC, Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, a few other cities and the unions decide who gets in the Governors office.
Hell, take a look at Nashville and Tennessee. Tech companies coming in, bringing more liberals and changing the voting base. And God forbid, Amazon picks Atlanta, that will be it.
She’s an avowed Socialist. And proud of it.
Almost all of her money comes from out of state. She’s a complete financial wreck, personally and is insane. But....
The black folks in the cities will vote for her, because she’s black and is promising, free everything.
The liberals, hipsters and northern transplants will vote for her because she’s running against a Republican.
John Ossoff, a complete and utter moron, almost won the initial runoff. I do not care that the Republican vote was spread due to the number of Republican candidates. Handel only beat him by a little less than 4%. That is not good.
I don’t believe this race is close in Georgia.
There’s troubling demographic news on all fronts for conservatives. Aside from the Yankee invasion of the south, which is real, allowing one million LEGAL immigrants into the United States every year who vote 80% Democrat will be the end of the GOP.
I’m one of those northerners. But all my relatives up north are Dems :- ( I live in Athens, GA, home of the Dawgs.
As for the Abrams caption, how about...
Make sure this Abrams tank runs out of gas, November 6th.
Northerners are who changed ga from dem governor to gop... northerner transplants are not socialist and not voting a black woman in place of a gop. Northerners also are from the mideast.. educated here living here.. if their education also gave them common sense, they will vote gop.
Northerners are not going to vote for a black woman who is a socialist. Northerners come from a different mind set... no matter if they are dems, they will have a hard time voting for this woman. The younger they are, the less sense they have, but they are not stupid... are they..
I live east of Athens... have a son lives in Forsyth county.. there are a lot of transplants in that county, from other countries and from the northern states... it’s a far cry from Atlanta. I just can’t see them voting for her.. she does not play well at all. I know she is offering everything, but the northerners don’t need hand outs. Atlanta is almost a different state. I drive down there and glad I don’t live there.
It’s BS.
Texas will go blue before Georgia.
As for myself and my wife, we came down to Georgia to escape the harsh Northeast winters, and to live in an affordable place for our retirement years.
It would be interesting to study what type of Northern person moves to the South to live.
My no research opinion is that the Dems are more clannish by nature — they stay with their group, think like their group, and vote like their group. They are less likely — on average — to move to the South.
What do other think?

And the northerners that changed the Dem Governor to GOP? Maybe. But lets not confuse a real, Southern Democrat, with what is happening now. The days of Roy Barnes, Zel Miller and Sam Nunn are over. Now you have an avowed Socialist, Stacy Abrams, running for Governor. President Trump only won by a little less than 5%.
This is about liberal dem’s moving into Atlanta, City of Decatur and all the other little cities that are popping up, and the Northern Suburbs. Funny thing is, they don’t have too much diversity in any of those places, as they are pretty darn white. Except for Cumming, which has a large Indian population, thanks to H1B Visas, who subsequently were playing the system to avoid paying school taxes, by putting their homes in their elderly parents names, who came here under family unification.
Exactly. 650,000 Trump-voting Alabamans loathed Roy Moore, couldn't bear to vote for him but thought he'd win anyways. Republicans should pretend these polls are real and get their asses to the voting booth.
There's an energy of motivation on their side this year and the stench of complacency on ours.
Stop pooh-poohing the polls and get out and vote!
The Pollster went down to Georgis
They were looking for an election to steal.
Not freakin likely. Abrams is running smear ads on Kemp that are so blatantly BS I doubt anybody is listening. She’s so bad of a candidate it’s unreal.
Like the claims about the Governor’s race in Florida, I simply don’t believe the media narrative. Abrams is a complete lunatic. That chit just won’t fly in either state.
My son lives in Cumming... there are a lot of, what I shall call, Indians there .. they are an unfriendly bunch. I think Forsyth is the most expensive county in GA. It’s full of the upper class. (include north Fulton). (I think everyone eats out.)
We moved here 30+ years ago from Indiana. The democrats of today are nothing like the Roy Barnes, Zell Miller and Sam Nunn ... and the left smells blood.
obama showed them how to get ugly and lie through their teeth.. get in your face and make trouble.
