ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before; Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe; Forward into battle see His banners go.
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before.
At the sign of triumph Satan's host doth flee; On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory. Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise; Brothers lift your voices proud your anthems raise.
Like a mighty army moves the church of God; Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod; We are not divided, all one body we, One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.
What the saints established that I hold for true; What the saints believed, that I believe too. Long as earth endureth, men the faith will hold; Kingdoms, nations, empires, in destruction rolled.
Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane, But the church of Jesus constant will remain; Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail; We have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail.
Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng, Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song; Glory, laud, and honour unto Christ the King; This through countless ages men and angels sing.
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus going on before.

"Onward, Christian Soldiers was written in 1865 with no intention of ever being published, especially in adult hymn books. Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould, its author, was at that time the curate of a parish in Yorkshire county in the north of England. "It was written in great haste, and I am afraid some of the rhymes are faulty. Certainly nothing has surprised me more than its great popularity."
In 1871 Arthur Sullivan wrote the tune St. Gertrude for the hymn, which further popularized the hymn and has ever since been its standard melody.

This is the same Sullivan as in Gilbert & Sullivan. Sullivan was also the leading Schubert scholar of his day. Arthur Sullivan wrote a number of hymn tunes including the one for Oh Lord of Hosts, To Thee I Cry.

The Carolinas are a wreck. It’s heart-wrenching to see how badly the area’s being hit. And that d*** storm just won’t move out!

We’re fine here. I don’t live in NC any more. Came back to TN in the ‘90s. I’ve never stopped missing NC though.

Today was cooler...time to start hiking again. It’s been so hot for so long I got out of the habit and have to work up to the more challenging trails.
Fireworks Trail is still closed for toxins and unexploded ordinance, so i guess that one is off the list!
((((shudder))))

It’s not a bad symphony at all. Ten years later, Brahms would revolutionize the symphony, and pieces like this that were reminiscent of Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn would disappear.

A 90 year old friend and I went out to lunch. She doesn’t drive so I pick her up once a month or so and we go to lunch.
I used to pick her up to come and visit with my Mom, even after Mom was bedridden. She had a keen eye for when Mom got tired and I’d take her home....a GOOD friend. Gave me a break.

We actually had a damp but not really rainy week...which is great because the forecasters say that since the ground is so saturated even one to two inches from the remnants of Hurricane Florence would be too much.
Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon is the timeframe for the hit.
