A man with a concealed-carry license was commended for coming to the aid of Cicero police who were engaged in a shootout with a man who shot and wounded an officer near the Stevenson Expressway Thursday, authorities said.
Cicero Police Officer Luis Duarte, 31, was shot four times during the encounter near the 4200 block of South Cicero Avenue during the evening rush hour, but it might have been worse if the armed citizen hadnt stepped in, officials said.
We were lucky enough to have a citizen on the street there whos a concealed-carry holder, and he also engaged in gunfire, Cicero Police Supt. Jerry Chlada Jr. said outside Mount Sinai Hospital, where Duarte was undergoing surgery Thursday night.

A bit overstated. Only 1 of the 4 who actually went up the tower was a “civie” (former Marine Crum), and he did not actually get out and shoot the perp; it was 2 of the officers. Yes, people were firing from below as well as other officers, but they did not stop him.
“Martinez reached the observation deck first. He told Crum to remain at the door. McCoy and Day reached the observation deck a few minutes later. Day, after helping M. J. Gabour, had returned to the 27th floor. He realized Martinez had gone up to the observation deck and told McCoy. At some point Crum accidentally fired his rifle.
Around 1:24 pm, while Whitman was looking south for the source of the rifle shot, Martinez and McCoy rounded the northeastern corner of the observation deck. Martinez fired on Whitman with his revolver, missing, and McCoy hit Whitman twice with his shotgun. Martinez then took McCoy’s shotgun from him, having emptied his own weapon, and fired a final shot into Whitman at point-blank range. In the immediate aftermath, Martinez was nearly shot himself by those on the ground, who did not yet realize that Whitman was dead.”
The movie THE DEADLY TOWER (1975) with Kurt Russell as the shooter, damned the civilian gun owners with faint praise. And the voiceover, at the end, telling about the shooter’s brain tumor was over ridden by a louder voiceover telling viewers to watch some other TV show coming on in a few days.
Yeah, so if all those civilians would have just ran and hid allowing the sniper the time to shoot at will those 3 law enforcement officers would have handled it just fine?
Even if the civilians shooting back were ineffective they distracted the shooter. My point is that without civilian back up there would have been more civilians killed.
And forgive me for not going into great detail but as it turns out when this was occurring I was somewhere in the jungle getting shot at myself and it was years after that I was even aware it happened.
shelter in place,
not return fire as it would be impossible and ineffective,
besides, it would endanger lives nearby.
The quickest way to end the threat is to suppress/take out the bad guy.
The citizen I’m sure.
I emailed the reporters and asked what kind of automatic weapon was used.
They wrote back that the cops didn’t say.(They reported what was told to them)
They have asked the cops that question and will update the article and me if they get an answer.
Remember that it wasn’t all that long ago when the Chicago police chief stated that he wanted his officers to shoot concealed carriers on sight?
Funny how things change.
NOT the officers who were on defense and already been shot.
Armpit of the south side? You haven't visited Englewood yet.
Perhaps, I’ll get Me One!
OODA Loop
“Perhaps, Ill get Me One!”
I’d be careful about that newfangled stuff. Wait till it’s been around awhile longer, see if it lasts.
Still working the Bugs out
of the 1911,,,yup.
If the cops were in great danger of being killed and not capable of defending themselves or a civilian were in great danger I would not hesitate to engage a bad guy. But I wasn’t there and being there when it all goes down is where you have to decide what to do.
That being said this guy risked a lot by joining in this fray especially in Illinois where they hate gun owners the way Trump is hated at CNN.
aint about to either.
Well, thanks for your service.
Accuracy is important, regardless of point made.
It wasn’t just 3 LEOs, actually. Those were the guys who got upstairs. There were apparently more on the ground along with other civies who had firearms. 1 apparently helped a student get home to get his gun but I don’t see the info on what happened next. Assume he came back and participated.
I didn’t say they were “ineffective”, nor did I state that 3 LEOs would do OK (again, there were more below). Civilians getting involved can definitely be helpful. But sometimes facts are overblown to make a point - and that ends up blowing credibility so no one listens. Often, that exaggeration/inaccuracy isn’t even necessary to prove a viewpoint.
You do not.
Your super cool manliness website failed you.
Remember that it wasnt all that long ago when the Chicago police chief stated that he wanted his officers to shoot concealed carriers on sight?
I believe that was open carriers in Milwaukee. And to be accurate it is the Cicero police chief doing the praising. Cicero is adjacent to Chicago where this happened. The perp managed to collapse just over the boundary apparently.
