~ Star Spangled Banner ~
Written by Francis Scott Key (1814)

Canteen Mission Statement

Showing support and boosting the morale of
our military and our allies military
and the family members of the above.
Honoring those who have served before.

The War of 1812 had been a particularly nasty conflict with the British. They had burned down the Capitol and the White House in Washington, and were set on taking the port of Baltimore, which was protected in part by Fort McHenry, just to the south.

On September 7th, 1814, during the build-up to the attack on Baltimore, two Americans, Colonel John Skinner and a lawyer and part-time poet by the name of Francis Scott Key, had gone out to one of the British ships. They had come to negotiate the release of Dr William Beanes, a friend of Key who had been seized following the attack on Washington. The British agreed, but all three had learned too much about the forthcoming attack on Baltimore and so were detained by the British on board the frigate Surprise until it was over.

The attack started on September 12th, 1814, and after an initial exchange of fire, the fleet withdrew to form an arc just outside the range of Fort McHenry's fire.

Skinner, Beanes and Key watched much of the bombardment from the British deck. The major attack started in heavy rain on the morning of September 13th. Just under three miles in the distance the three men caught glimpses of the star-shaped fort with its huge flag - 42ft long, with 8 red stripes, 7 white stripes and 15 white stars, and specially commissioned to be big enough that the British could not possibly fail to see it from a distance.

In the dark of the night of the 13th, the shelling suddenly stopped. Through the darkness they couldn't tell whether the British forces had been defeated, or the fort had fallen.

As the rain cleared, and the sun began to rise, Key peered through the lifting darkness anxious to see if the flag they had seen the night before was still flying. And so it was that he scribbled on the back of an envelope the first lines of a poem he called Defense of Fort M'Henry.

O, say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming

Absolutely we need to keep it in everyone’s memory! We don’t want our heritage to die with our generations!

Good evening, radu...do you think you’ll be getting residual rain from either hurricane?

I heard today it may be moving a little more south, a little bit away from Fort Monroe, maybe? Wonder how our other east coast friends will be impacted.

Paychecks out on time...but, boy, what a morning.

Almost 2am last night, then all the fixes this morning, but I made it. We will see what was missed over the next couple weeks.

I came home to my chair, a tv movie, and my laptop. Staying awake is getting harder and harder. LOL! But I want to get caught up on the hurricane thread before crashing.

Well, it’s slow going, but maybe one day he’ll actually trust me. I hope so. He’s a good ol’ boy!

I can’t tell if the moon affects mine. Peaches and Ginger are so laid back, it’s hard to tell if anything does. LOL!

Hey there, Kathy.

We might get a little rain here, I believe they said Monday. It all depends on where Florence ends up tracking. The mountains will keep the brunt of it to the east.

Fort Monroe won’t be out of the woods entirely since it’s a huge storm but it won’t be as bad as if it had stayed on the original track. Flooding will be their biggest issue since the storm isn’t going to move very quickly.

It’s going to be hard on the NC/SC coast with the storm surge. I’ve been keeping an eye on the NC coast via a couple of live cam sites. The surf’s kicking up tonight.

It is moving more south, but it’s a very huge storm and the ones in the VA, MD and DE areas could still see some rain and high surf, which in itself can be quite nasty!

It sure looks like the rain might reach your neck of the woods, radu.

Whew! At least it’s behind you now, for a couple of weeks. Easy to understand your pillow calling after the late night. LOL

I’ve checked in on the hurricane thread tonight, too, while checking out different live cams. I wonder what will be left of the beautiful islands along the NC coast when this is over. I have a lot of fond memories from time spent there.

It did a little dip last night .... was moving NW, then went WNW for a while, then back to NW. I think the cold front that came through here is what affected the track. I’d hoped it would shove it back out to sea but no such luck. It’s just slowing it down and shoving it south eventually.

We might get a little rain here but the mountains will keep the brunt to the east. Mainly we’ll have a breezy weekend and since the temps are going back up, - UGH - the wind will make it a little more comfortable outside.

Well, I guess thank goodness for the wind in your case. Maybe it’ll help keep the humidity at bay.

Are ya all ready for your debut? :)

Ooooh, we’ll be plenty humid. LOL! But with a stiff wind blowing, it isn’t so uncomfortable. No wind and we melt.

I took a break from studying tonight. Hubby’s cousin was here earlier and we chatted for quite a while about the museum and other stuff. That’s why I was late chiming in tonight.
Been doing a little housework been checking out various cams in NC and news here at FR.

I’ll study some more tomorrow night and with luck will be ready if I have to step in for a tour on Saturday.

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Did you and Gizmo have the lake to yourselves or was there a decent crowd out enjoying it too?

He let you scratch the “magic spot” and didn’t run. That’s always been what I work on when taming a feral cat and once they stay put when getting scratched there, the process has always sped up. I hope that’s the case with Ghost.

A few - - only a few - - of our cats seem unaffected by the moon but the rest certainly are. And the new moon seems to wind them up more than the full moon.

Other than Suvi and Willow romping most of the night, it’s been pretty quiet.

it seems that Suvi always romps. LOL!

I hope he is going to get less scared. The only time I try to hold him back is when Peaches wants in and Ghost wants to be the tough guy. Then I have to get between them. I don’t want Peaches getting hurt because he ALways gets an infection from injuries.

Suvi is the EverReady Bunny of cats. LOL! If she’s awake, she’s on the go. She eventually runs out of steam for short time but after a little nap - - ZOOM!
Sure would be nice if her energy could be bottled!

He’s already less scared. He didn’t run today. If the tail and butt raise up while you’re scratching him, you’re in like flint!

Perfectly understandable needing to keep the two of them apart what with Peaches’ issues. Poor feller having a crapped-out immune system.

I think we had the park to ourselves. Gizmo really seemed to enjoy it. We’ll see how things go today.

I’ll keep trying. Maybe one of these days, he’ll really like me. Now one of the black kittens is another story. He hates being touched. The only one. Grey and Stubbs rub up against my legs and purr so loud. And Grey likes to nibble my toes. So far she hasn’t bitten too hard. LOL!

I gotta go. Just saw the time. Yeesh. I keep thinking I’ll do better and then I don’t. See ya tomorrow night sometime!
