Walked into my Mom and Dad’s just as second plane hit. My Mom said ,”We’re under attack”.
I was in disbelief. i asked, “attack? By who? The Chinese?”
Then, quickly, deciding the who was not that important at that moment, and not knowing if the two towers was just the first salvo,I said, “I’m going to gas up my car, go to the store , and go to the bank to get cash. I will come back and get your car gassed up, and take you to your bank.”
Did those things, then went to my elderly and disabled neighbors’ houses who might need help with going to gas up, go to bank, buy some groceries, etc. Some had not yet heard of the attacks.
After I finished all that, it was close to 1pm, and I turned on the TV.
Indeed. First one...maybe an accident; second one...no WAY on earth!
once on duty it all unfolded....
I was at work when the Challenger exploded and when the Americans won the hockey gold cup in 1984, at least when it was first shown on tv...
Ill bet it was chaos for a while!...
The next day the Air Traffic Controllers were quiet and bored as they had nothing to do.
September 11, 2001 = first day of Totalitarian America and the Knee Jerk Police State.
It changed our community even to this day. The next year, on the anniversary, we American teachers assembled together, faced in the same direction as no one had a flag, and recited the Pledge of Allegiance together. It was actually just a small act, but a large act of unity and remembrance.
Unlike the Kennedy assassination, it is not etched into my mind. I guess because I think the first thing I saw was that an airliner had crashed into the World Trade Center.
At the time I did not know the buildings would collapse or that it was terrorism. As soon as the second one hit, everyone knew what was going on.
I still was surprised that they collapsed. I knew that during WWII a B-25 had crashed into the Empire State Building. It did some damage but was fairly quickly repaired. I had no idea just how much fuel those airliners held.
I had never heard of him before 9-11. I remembered that I had read in our local paper the day before that the evil blind sheik was supposed to go on trial that week...maybe even on the 11th.
Sitting in my kitchen watching Fox and Friends. My daughter was awaiting the birth of her first baby and called terrified she would go into labor that day. She was supposed to deliver in Boston and since they were pretty much evacuating all the buildings she was pretty panicked.
My husband,on a business trip , had just gone through the Linvoln Tunnel headed to NJ. He didnt think he could get home but the Tappen Zee Bridge was open so he quickly headed north. He could see the smoke from Manhattan as he drove across the bridge totally in tears.
The baby waited 4 days and was born on the 15th.

Wow. Amtrak could have made a huge difference if people had been more aware of its services. I hope you have gotten the chance to change that perception.

NEVER! That had to be so scary. it was bad enough watching it on TV.
Indeed, life in America has never been the same as before. Less trust and more anger.

You’re right. Like a rapist, Islam took our innocence.
Thanks for the ping-a-ling, Kathy! (((hugs)))
Hope things have not been too crazy at work today.
Work, like the rest of us.
Absolutely.
