Pictures of the snow covered creatures have swept across social media as viewers marvel at the bizarre scenes.
Kitty Viljoen captured elephants enjoying the snow in the Sneeuberg on the Western Cape of South Africa, where snow hit late last week.
Sneeuberg translates to Snow Mountain and dustings are not unusual across parts of South Africa in the winter, but this cold snap comes particularly late in the season.
She also photographed giraffes in snow in the Karoo semi-desert region.

Do they know its NOT Christmas time at all?
One of my fondest memories was a Valentines Day when we woke up to about 2 inches of snow and my puppies just had the best time playing in it
Incredibly I was able to take a picture of my favorite pup rearing up on his hind legs and actually catching a snowball with his front paws
I was wondering where all the cold went from our global warming shift. Has Al Gore been told yet so he can start a campaign of ice age theories for the animals? He might get an award from PETA that can go up on his mantel right next to his nobel that was crap also.

I love to throw my labs a white baseball in the snow, now that’s entertainment.
That’s a lovely picture but it has a sort of unsettling effect...
Interesting, “late snow”. Winter was not harsh last year here but it just held on all through April. Summer was hot early with little transition from Spring and has begun to give way to Fall early it feels like though temps are “normal” for this time of year but cooler than in recent years past.
Sunspot activity remains low suggesting a cool period is at hand. Old timers say the weather is more extreme than they recall it being. My theory is a cooler average temp is being accommodated by longer cool periods in the shoulder seasons of Spring and Fall but not more extreme... yet.
Someone will live long enough to find out what happens.
Try waking up to 2 feet.....Two inches I won't even shovel let alone break out the snowblower.
Maybe somebody should inform them where the snow went...
Actually, this bodes ill for the northern hemisphere.
The southern hemisphere also has a jet stream. In the northern hemisphere, the lack of a northern flow of weather allows the jet stream to dip south. This means the Arctic and Canada get warmer, and the US gets colder.
In the southern hemisphere, it is the mirror image of this, which indicates that the jet stream down there is moving north, thus causing colder temperatures in southern Africa and Australia. This year they have even had a cold drop in parts of Indonesia.
So this suggests as the world tilts, the northern hemisphere may get the same thing in spades.
According to the Farmers’ Almanac’s famous long-range weather outlook, it’s going to be a “teeth-chattering” cold one, with plenty of snow.
I hear ya, Ive lived in true winters.
But the two inches was a real treat for us, and it was mostly melted by mid afternoon.
The simplest things are great fun to them. God bless em
Sounds like a secret CIA code: “There is snow on the giraffe. John has a long mustache. The chair is against the wall.”
Bratch you owe me a new monitor screen for that one!
OH, NOES!
Globull cooling!!!!!
Quick, tax something to save us all!
If it’s snowing in Africa, I’m not looking forward to the coming winter in TX. Brr!
I saw what you did there.
That’s mean, funny but mean.
