Serena Williams' claims of sexism in the US Open final have been backed by the governing body of women's tennis.
WTA chief executive Steve Simon said the umpire showed Williams a different level of tolerance over Saturday's outbursts than if she had been a man.
She got a code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racquet abuse and a game penalty for calling the umpire a "thief" in the defeat by Naomi Osaka.
The American said it was "sexist" to have been penalised a game.
"The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men versus women," Simon said in a statement.
"We do not believe that this was done last night."
He also called for coaching to be allowed "across the sport". Umpire Carlos Ramos penalised Williams after seeing her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, making a hand gesture. The Frenchman later admitted he was trying to coach his player.
The head of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which organises the US Open, said men "are badgering the umpire on the changeovers and nothing happens".
"We watch the guys do this all the time," USTA chief Katrina Adams said.
"There's no equality when it comes to what the men are doing to the chair umpires and what the women are doing, and I think there has to be some consistency across the board.
"I'm all about gender equality and I think when you look at that situation these are conversations that will be imposed in the next weeks. We have to treat each other fairly and the same."
BBC tennis presenter Sue Barker, who said: "I've sat courtside watching the men ranting at umpires and they haven't been given a violation."

The Steroids are stating to show
Who would think that politicization would take over WOMEN’S TENNIS as much as the NFL...?
Or faster than the NFL.
Serena Williams, the Hillary of the tennis world.
She threw a tantrum because she was going to lose and she knew it. She had to blame someone or something else rather than her old frumpy physique that was clearly no match for youth and fitness on the other side of the net.
She looked really awful.
I was taught how to lose with grace and dignity. Obviously she wasn’t.
This could be true.
I thought her display was horrible, unprofessional, sour grapes, rude, poor sportsmanship.
But I also would like the punishments for women speaking badly at a match equal to the men speaking badly. She called the guy a thief. Men have used very foul language and not gotten such penalties; if thst is true, that is not fair.
Like the shirt changing thing. A man can quickly swap out a sweaty shirt. The woman player who had a serious coveraging black sports bra, not in the least revealing, turned from the camera and swift;y whipped off a shirt and slipped a new one on. Far less skin revealing than a man doing the same thing. That was sexist.
Um... there is no consistency in treatment from DIFFERENT umpires strictly among men players. Different umpires rule differently. Some ignore the rules. Some apply them.
This umpire is tougher on everyone.
So, show me an example of when a man attacked him the way Serena did and was not penalized, and I’ll entertain the thought that it was sexist. To me, Serena looks unhinged, and highly threatening. She scared the hell out of me, just sitting on my sofa.
If there was any bias, it was due to the aggressiveness of her looks.
Not making any excuses for her but sometimes when top flight athlete’s start to slip (and they all do eventually) they will act out. I’ve seen it before. It’s very difficult to realize your talents may be diminishing.
Worst display of sportsmanship I have ever seen. Before the mens championship they did a 8-10 minute tape that tore Serena to shreds - and then in a short discussion Chris Everette was reasonable - John McEnroe not as much he was against the chair which is not a surprise.
Serena was a disgrace.
I am sad to say that most black people I see responding on Facebook are supporting her.
Because its RAYCISSSSSSSSSSSSS of course...
Despite the fact that her coach ADMITTED coaching her from the sidelines, even though he thinks she might not have seen him.
The Judge did see it and called it, correctly.
Good. Another pro sport to despise. FUWilliams and the high horse your rode in on.
Miss.Naomi Osaka beat a vicious transgender.
If it weren't for sexism she'd be in major league baseball. /sarc
Appears the Colon Kaepernick (yes, I know how his first name is spelled) Nike effect is rubbing on on Serena.
Just Do It
So, every time it looks like she’s gonna lose she’s gonna yell -——ISM? ....You fill in the blanks.
Grace and dignity generally are not traits associated with Leftists when they lose at anything. They can’t help but RESIST. Observe their reactions.
Tantrums are much less common now than in the 70’s and 80’s, due to availability of instant replay. John “superbrat” McEnroe threw quite a few tantrums back in the day, and other male players of his era did too.
Maybe Serena’s upset that Nike pays Kaepernick more, while she is better at tennis than he is at football.
Not the kind of behavior to ape
But the racist sore loser rotten to the
core apple didnt fall far from the tree
She got what she deserved.
