September 10 is the statistical peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season, and the conga line of storms dancing across the Atlantic is not disappointing historical data. The Governors of NC and SC have declared states of emergency for a potential major hurricane landfall, while Hurricane Florence is slowly creeping westward. Florence is predicted to increase forward motion and intensity Monday. Hurricanes Hazel (1954) and Hugo (1989) are two notorious major hurricanes to make landfall in NC and SC, respectively. North Carolina has prior experience with "F" named hurricanes. Hurricanes Fran (1996) and Floyd (1999) caused widespread flooding and damage in the Tar Heel state.
The NHC has been issuing Public Advisories for Florence since August 30. The five day "Cone of Uncertainty" archive progression since Aug. 30 may be found here.
Isaac is a small storm. Isaac is predicted to steadily strengthen during the next few days as the storm remains over warm waters and in a low wind shear environment in the short term. The NHC predicts Isaac will reach hurricane status within 2 days.
Helene is expected to reach hurricane status in the short term. However, Helene is not anticipated to threaten U.S. interests. The forecast track turns north into the mid-Atlantic.

We were out of power for almost three weeks, with Ike.
We finally had a diesel generator brought in (lucked out) and that was when we purchased our home, natural gas generator (after Ike).
It was worth EVERY penny, during Harvey.

The mountains have a huge risk. The I-40 corridor is bad enough already.
I travel that more than your local.
This storm drifted closer to MB. Hotels in Columbia, Charlotte and Raleigh are booked. The brunt on Holden and Sunset will be hell. Not good. I am in Concord BTW.
It’s moving south.
Don’t forget the Eastern Divide. What lands east, stays east, west... west.
I’m thinking smart evacuees will leverage this and cross over, but two main questions.
How many are smart, and can afford, the extra miles, and, outside of I-40, just how much traffic can the winding pass roads handle?
I think those maps are based on the prior track of a straight shot NW through NC and not the revised 11:00PM track where it swings across upstate SC.
I think this guy's tweet says it all...about whether to stay, or evacuate....
Riding out a hurricane is the easy part. Surviving a month without electric ,water, no gas, no food, no stores, trees blocking every street, flooded highways, streets. No AC or fans in 95 degree swamp humid weather.
Nah man
Go.#HurricaneFlorence— Keith M. (@ksecus) September 12, 2018
And just like that I have 10 gallons of water, & didnt have to fight a crowd. Empty into a pitcher as needed! 🙂On to the next 10. These are gallon size zip lock bags, filled with clean water from my tap. I can use it to drink,(camp style)cook, or even bathe.#HurricaneFlorence pic.twitter.com/bv3zJxljIu— Marcus Stanley (@pianist247) September 12, 2018
Folks also suggested freezing them, to keep fridge/ice chest cold, while they thaw for drinking.
Thank you for that Windy.com link, Diana in Wisconsin! Amazing.
Prayers for all FReepers in Florence's path...
Thanks for the ice reminder. I’m going to make up some blocks of it in the deep freeze.
I’ve had a new, 55 gallon blue plastic water barrel in the basement for years and will be filling it for the first time tomorrow.
Great moniker for this thread. Hopefully, this high-pressure ridge is going to tire Florence out a little wherever she comes ashore. A few models say it will even push her back out to sea. Prayers are welcome.
To those who prepare for the electricity to go out:
If the below link does not work, go to grainger.com and search for O2Cool cooling fans, check off NO CORD. They take 2 D batteries, $12.40 plus tax each. I have 4 of them. They are wonderful - very lightweight and can be moved easily. I have 2 blowing on me right now, about 5 feet away.
Grainger is a brick & mortar contractors’ store, they do sell online but shipping is like $10 minimum. FYI their stores close at 5 pm weekdays only.
Thanks for the info on the O2Cool battery fans. I just checked and Amazon Prime has them as well: https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_6?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=o2cool+battery+fan&sprefix=o2cool%2Cinstant-video%2C163&crid=L0OKAPXIXYMU
Not liking the newest track right now. Puts the eye right over the beach house at 2 AM Saturday.
Lighten up tomkat.
I popped on the thread this morning and see the updated track takes the eye right over our beach house at 2 AM Saturday.
Sometimes a little humor helps.
Are you near Oak Island NC? I have family there.
Behind Holden Beach down near the SC border.
Thanks Jane
HUrricanes create lots of stress and anxiety,Laz offers a little bit of humor and its needed in these times. We should all give him a break.
