Bookies placing odds on the identity of NY Times op-ed

Whodunnit?  That's the question roiling social media and news websites around the world as the hunt is on for the identity of the anonymous author of a New York Times op-ed that savaged Donald Trump and his administration.

How crazy has it gotten?  Bookies around the world are giving odds on who the traitor might be.

Fox News:

Vice President Mike Pence – and "the field" – lead offshore bookmaking picks as the White House mole behind the anonymous bombshell New York Times op-ed blasting President Trump.

Pence was listed at 2-to-3 odds on the site MyBookie as the fifth column official who claims to be working behind the scenes to stop some of Trump's policies that they find wrongheaded.

The biggest favorite, at 1-3 odds, is "the field," someone not listed among the 18 administration officials listed by the Costa Rica-based operation.

At 2-to-3 odds, a winning bettor investing $1 would profit 66 cents.  At 1-to-3, a gambler wagering $1 would net 33 cents with a win.

Why Pence?  Desperate gamblers have latched on to the thinnest of reeds: the use of a single word in the op-ed that has also been used on occasion by the vice president.

HuffPo:

The unidentified author singles out the late Arizona Sen. John McCain as "a lodestar for restoring honor to public life and our national dialogue."

The word – which Merriam-Webster defines as either "a star that leads or guides" or a person who "serves as an inspiration, model, or guide" – isn't that commonly used.  But Pence apparently says it a lot, according to this mash-up posted on Twitter:

My bet is that the whole thing is fabricated. What are the odds on that?

I agree that it’s probably a holdover. I’ll echo Mark Levin’s criticism at the time the new administration came in of the failure to ask for and accept the resignations of ALL political appointees. You can’t go into battle with people who by definition aren’t loyal to you in positions of high responsibility. By the way, whatever happened to the tradition in the western democracies of resigning your post if your ethics don’t allow you to serve the government of which you’re an employee? I guess money’s more important than integrity.

Identity of the source?

Easy! The hinder parts of the reporter, particularly below the waist.

Is the NY Times itself having written it an option? What are the odds on that?

“I am of the opinion that this is likely an Obama holdover (of which there are still more than a hundred in the employ of the White House alone) “

I don’t understand why these people are still there? When you are the kind of “change agent” that Trump is, it seems to me that getting rid of holdovers would be a priority. Just move them out wholesale at the beginning and you severely reduce the chances of what’s playing out now occurring.

Anyone in mind? Let me know by message to not start rumors by speculating. I’m wondering if adoring McCain and not acknowledging the Deep State would lead to someone in the State Department who’s been feeding Trump real bad information to keep the war-mongering going.

Read the Opinion piece again. It easily could be written by an outsider with communication to the White House staff. The example they highlight is Russian Foreign policy. He definitely would be in constant communication with this staff at a minimum.

I re-read the piece and nothing convinces me he is not in day to day communication. Huntsmen’s own words. We set policy.

If you have occasion to visit us in Moscow, I will introduce you to hundreds of colleagues, who are the most highly trained in their field with years of experience working in Russia. Representatives of our foreign service, civil service, military and intelligence services have neither the time nor inclination to obsess over politics, though the issues of the day are felt by all. Their focus is on the work that needs to be done to stabilize the most dangerous relationship in the world, one that encompasses nuclear weapons, fighting terrorism, stopping bloodshed in Ukraine, and seeking a settlement of the seemingly intractable Syrian crisis. Their dedication to service to their country is above politics, and it inspires me to the core. It is my standard.

How about Robert Lighthizer?

Is he frustrated with President Trump's negotiating approach?

It’s probably a White House receptionist. He or she is sabotaging the president by re-routing calls to the wrong department. Either that or an intern who is putting extra sugar in the break room coffee.

Maybe being a high level official means that they work on the second floor of the west wing.

This bookie will make a boatload if folks bet cuz he’s only giving odds for Pence and Cabinet heads. So where’s the odds that NYT made it all up and odds for lower level staffers?
