Whodunnit? That's the question roiling social media and news websites around the world as the hunt is on for the identity of the anonymous author of a New York Times op-ed that savaged Donald Trump and his administration.
How crazy has it gotten? Bookies around the world are giving odds on who the traitor might be.
Vice President Mike Pence – and "the field" – lead offshore bookmaking picks as the White House mole behind the anonymous bombshell New York Times op-ed blasting President Trump.
Pence was listed at 2-to-3 odds on the site MyBookie as the fifth column official who claims to be working behind the scenes to stop some of Trump's policies that they find wrongheaded.
The biggest favorite, at 1-3 odds, is "the field," someone not listed among the 18 administration officials listed by the Costa Rica-based operation.
At 2-to-3 odds, a winning bettor investing $1 would profit 66 cents. At 1-to-3, a gambler wagering $1 would net 33 cents with a win.
Why Pence? Desperate gamblers have latched on to the thinnest of reeds: the use of a single word in the op-ed that has also been used on occasion by the vice president.
The unidentified author singles out the late Arizona Sen. John McCain as "a lodestar for restoring honor to public life and our national dialogue."
The word – which Merriam-Webster defines as either "a star that leads or guides" or a person who "serves as an inspiration, model, or guide" – isn't that commonly used. But Pence apparently says it a lot, according to this mash-up posted on Twitter:

They are laying odds, are they actually taking bets? And is anyone stupid enough to bet on a proposition which will never be established sufficiently to pay off?
Put your money on Jon Huntsmen.
Maybe this whole thing is BS? Anyone think of that?
A seasoned disruptor would wisely interject speaking and writing styles of others to send the Sleuths on a wild goose chase.
Well, The author of this op-ed clearly idolizes John McCain and denies the existence of a “Deep State,” preferring instead to describe the cabal responsible for the slow-motion coup conducted through the increasingly brazen “special counsel” as the “steady state” — an apt descriptor of the permanent government bureaucracy that has been weaponized against the president since early 2016.
Here is also an important “tell”. The author writes:
“It’s not just that the special counsel looms large. Or that the country is bitterly divided over Mr. Trump’s leadership. Or even that his party might well lose the House to an opposition hellbent on his downfall.”
The emphasis is mine. A Republican would likely not say “his party,” but rather “our party” or “my party.”
I am of the opinion that this is likely an Obama holdover (of which there are still more than a hundred in the employ of the White House alone) writing as if he were in fact a disaffected member of the Trump inner circle when he is in truth a bitter refusenik still stinging from the rejection of November last.
Would BS be part of ‘The Field”?
Oh! that’s a good guess.
We’ll find out... there are good people in the Administration who have been taken in by this person... Eventually they’ll figure it out.
Seems demcorats jumped the gun or the shark... the funeral pushed them to ‘go for it’ two months early. Yes, we’ll know soon... either we figure it out or the democrats will out the person as the ‘October Surprise’... I’m betting it’s Kellyanne...
We have done so at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure.
Pence's job would not be jeopardized as Trump cannot fire Pence.
Who is that?
Q flipped?
Obama holdover, Jon Huntsmen. He served as President Barack Obamas ambassador to China. His brother, Paul Huntsman, bought the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper in 2016 and is currently its owner and publisher (liberal newspaper in Utah). His daughter hates Trump. Her tweet after the Russian summit, “No negotiation is worth throwing your own people and country under the bus.”
Russian Ambassador, so the Russian talk makes sense.
I haven’t read the NYT in ages!
Why would it be?
There's 5,000 executive employees and nearly all of them voted for Hillary Clinton.
There's plenty of people in Washington DC working diligently to hobble Trump. It's a swampy mess.
Ummm, no. I think that's my shoeshine boy.
I say the whole thing is Fake News...a HOAX by disgruntled DemocRATS! Journalistic “ethics” = oxymoron!
