How Russia Kills Abroad

British authorities on Wednesday indicted two men for the March chemical-weapons attack on a former Russian double agent on British soil. The new details add to the evidence that Vladimir Putin’s regime is responsible, but its reckless methods are the real stunner.

Police and prosecutors allege the men they identify as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov—almost certainly pseudonyms—arrived at London’s Gatwick airport on Friday, March 2, smuggling the weapons-grade nerve agent Novichok in a small counterfeit perfume bottle. They ferried the chemical on suburban trains and the Tube through central London to a hotel, where nonfatal quantities of Novichok were found two months later.

On Sunday, March 4, they again carried the Novichok alongside hundreds of other people on public transport—they couldn’t have rented a car?—to Salisbury, where they sprayed the chemical on the front door of the home of their intended target, Sergei Skripal. He and his daughter Yulia fell seriously ill later that day, as did police officer Nick Bailey after he tried to examine the house. All three spent weeks in the hospital.

The alleged assassins then disposed of their fake perfume bottle, which was discovered almost four months later by Charlie Rowley and his partner, Dawn Sturgess, in a bin for charity donations. He fell seriously ill. She died of the poisoning.

Nothing will come of these indictments. Since Russia refuses to extradite its nationals, Britain isn’t even asking. The most effective response is what Britain and its allies are already doing: sustained financial sanctions against Mr. Putin’s corrupt regime.

Putin's regime is evil, and I don't think the President should have summits with Putin that boost his stature.

Every post-Tsarist regime in Russia has been evil. Because they have 7000+ nukes, we have to deal with them on some level, like it or not.

Perhaps, tighter control of travelers would help by increasing the intensity of the inspections at the airport including the body and luggage. Separating the traveler and the luggage seems to compound the monitoring process.

In this world, there are two types of people: Good people, and Russians.

Skirpal thing is bad but hardly the worst thing they have done. Regime is responsible for way worse.

I read an article some years ago when Russia was fighting a hot war in Chechnya. The other side (rebels is overused and often misapplied) were based out of Turkey. The article said a team would track the targets in Turkey. A hit man would arrive in Turkey, be picked up, supplied with weapons, and be taken to the target. He would kill the target and then be taken directly to an airport (port or other exit) and leave. Often, the killer was out of the country before the bodies were discovered.

On a side note, it’s amazing that liberals in Russia think they can act like liberals in America and write bad things about Putin. You’d think they’d look around at the body count and arrive at the conclusion of somebody who has evidence against a Clinton, and decide to write about gardening instead.

Russia should have hired muslims to kill those people, then they would have just gotten a slap on the wrist.

Why should I believe any of this?

Russian agents smuggle a deadly weapons grade nerve agent into the UK in a small perfume bottle, and then spray it on the front door of their victim's home?

Did they wear respirators and protective clothing while they sprayed the nerve agent?

Did Customs allow two men from Russia to carry an unknown liquid onto a passenger plane?

What would the Russian agents have done if Customs had ordered them to open the bottle?

This fairy tale sounds like it was written by the same people who claim Bashar Assad (a Putin ally) murdered dozens of women and children with chlorine gas - AFTER Assad had clearly won the Syrian Civil War!

'Why should I believe any of this?'

Because only the Russian government had the motive, means and the opportunity to murder Sergei Skripal like this.

'Russian agents smuggle a deadly weapons grade nerve agent into the UK in a small perfume bottle, and then spray it on the front door of their victim's home?

Did they wear respirators and protective clothing while they sprayed the nerve agent?'

I doubt they would have worn respirators and protective clothing. Too conspicuous in a public place. Besides, Russians have never been known for their observance of health and safety requirements. You know they were still putting asbestos in their military respirator filters up to 1990:

Not the sharpest tools in the box that's for sure.

'Did Customs allow two men from Russia to carry an unknown liquid onto a passenger plane?

What would the Russian agents have done if Customs had ordered them to open the bottle?'

The GRU would have sent the Novichok to their London embassy inside the regularly delivered diplomatic bag. No need to worry about UK Customs agents etc then.

'This fairy tale sounds like it was written by the same people who claim Bashar Assad (a Putin ally) murdered dozens of women and children with chlorine gas - AFTER Assad had clearly won the Syrian Civil War!'

Who else wanted Sergei Skripal dead as much as ex-GRU officer Vladimir Putin? He even hinted that he was going to be murdered when he exchanged him for those Russian spies. Assassinating a Russian traitor on British soil right before their general election would have secured Putin many more votes.
