Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh touted the importance of an independent judiciary as his confirmation hearings began with strident Democratic criticism that he would be President Donald Trump's man on the high court.
On Wednesday, Kavanaugh can expect to spend most of the day in the hot seat, sparring with Democratic senators over abortion, guns, executive power and other high-profile issues.
A long day of questioning awaits the 53-year-old appellate judge, whom Trump nominated in July to fill the seat of retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. The change could make the court more conservative on a range of issues.
Barring a surprise, Republicans appear on track to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, perhaps in time for the first day of the new term, Oct. 1, little more than a month before congressional elections.

They are disrupting AGAIN. I’m sick of this
By the time each Dim finishes bloviating, they’ll only be able to ask one question which Kavanaugh will easily brush aside.
The AP used to report news. Now they doctor it up...
Doubtful, more like a long day of listening to Dem speeches and attempts to put words in his mouth.
Grassley starts off by pointing out all of the planned disruptions yesterday, and is interrupted by more disruptions.
Up to a certain point I can see him allowing the Democrats to make fools of themselves, but if he allows this crap again today he’s just going to look foolish and out of control.
They are supposed to get 30 hours of debate. Hopefully, they will keep things going into Friday so that the vote can happen next week.
When was that?
Will they show some of the Violence Trump talked about ? It’s all about Terrorizing Kavanaugh and his Family
About 60 years ago...
Unfortunately, there is no shortage of men who are NOT in their right mind.
Grassley just sticks up for the screeching harpies, claiming their constant interruptions is their right of “free speech.”
Wow. Talk about a complete failure.
I would love for him to repeatedly remind the not-so-distinguished inquisitors that he cannot determine how he would rule on a subject that has not been fully presented with legal points, counterpoints and precedence. Then end that with, further, it would not be prudent for me to have an opinion or telegraph my thoughts on any current political issue that may come before the court “in honor of the Ginsburg rule”.
Grassley keeps claiming Freedom Of Speech but if your speek but cant be understood isnt that just freedom of noise.
Its all opinion, not news anymore.
Each of the citizens that sit in and observe the hearing is a guest of a politician. I would like each disruptor identified along with who’s guest they were.
Put large screen TV's outside the chambers and let the commiefa thugs protest out there. Anyone else sick of democrats attempting to stop 'the people' from being able to see the proceedings?
Grassley epitomizes typical Republican weakness, unfortunately.
The Republicans act like they’re at a country club. The Democrats act like they’re at a boxing match.
