A Twitter official said Tuesday that President Trump does not have a "blanket exception" from a possible ban by the social media platform.
The companys legal and policy chief Vijaya Gadde told Politico that while the company has often given Trump an exception for possible policy violations because of the newsworthiness of his tweets, there is not a blanket exception for the president or anyone else.
0 The company has come under fire from Trump critics for not punishing the president for specific use of the platform. Trump often uses his account to launch personal attacks on political opponents, criticize the media and, on occasion, announce major policy or personnel decisions.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey told Politico that his team considers context and public interest when evaluating tweets from Trump and others, echoing his past explanation for why the company has not punished the president.
"We have to balance it with the context that its in," he said. "So my role is to ask questions and make sure were being impartial, and were upholding consistently our terms of service, including public interest."
Twitter has defended its decision to not delete some of Trumps tweets in the past, saying that the tweets are newsworthy. Last year, Trump used his Twitter to threaten North Korea, which some speculated could be considered a declaration of war and a violation of Twitters policy.
The company said in January that blocking world leaders from Twitter would hide important information people should be able to see and debate.
Dorsey is set to testify to two congressional committees this week amid a number of controversies over how the company handles political content.
Conservatives, including Trump, have accused the platform of, among other things, intentionally shadow-banning conservative voices. The company has acknowledged a glitch that muted some conservatives in search results, but said it also impacted some progressives and is being addressed.
Banning him would guarantee a successful competitor within days.
Guess who they will ban 1st day out of office?
Wont be til 2025 though.
Buy the puts if The Donald ever gets banned.
[ Twitter: Trump not exempt from being banned ]
Do it. Now. Prove yet again that the liberal left are nothing but gun-grabbing, censoring Nazis to more of America and the world.
Trump would love it if Twitter banned him (temporarily, of course. He’d just Tweet from the official POTUS account instead).
Do you realize how much hay could be made from that? How would it look? He’d look like an incredible martyr to Free Speech, and the big, bad Tech censor would look horrible to the average Joe. Powerful internet leftists trying to muzzle the President? I dare them. Go ahead.
Honestly, I’m wondering if there isn’t already one in the rack waiting for that to happen and have Trump be their first account. I mean it wouldn’t shock me at this point...POTUS is in control.
Rinse and repeat:
“There is no political bias at Twitter.”
And they will likewise ban all the nasty critics of the president, right?
@Jack, I effing double-dog dare ya...
Gee,I wonder if DJT has the authority to order a tax audit on the company and its top officers.
Ever read the replies to one of Trumps tweets? Those nasty disgusting comments and posters are never banned, hell you can go read them today.
Is that a death knell I hear!?
Ban Trump = 90% drop in market value.
Just DO IT.
Trump will go elsewhere with 60+million users.
hahahaha...CNN has less than 1 million viewers in prime time...Trumps Twitter is awesome in comparison...and it costs him nothing!
Do it. I can't think of a faster way to boost the hell out of your competition than by Twit-fest doing something so stupid.
They’ll go bankrupt.
I half wish they do ban him. Then watch what happens to their stock.
Sounds like another condescending warning issued by our domestic enemies to our duly elected President.
Big Media needs something to detract from the leftist children who made headlines today.
Yeah. Go ahead. Ban him. See what happens to your business, dope.
