CORPORATE SUICIDE WATCH, NIKE EDITION
Powerline Blog ^ | 09/04/18

Nike has chosen the star of its 30th anniversary #JustDoIt advertising campaign: Colin Kaepernick. At first glance, it seems weird for an athletic shoe company to select as its corporate icon someone who is no longer an athlete, and was never a star. At second glance, it gets weirder:

Nike apparently thinks Kaepernick has sacrificed everything, which tells you something about 21st century corporate America. Kaepernich is a multimillionaire whose “sacrifice” consisted of kneeling during the National Anthem, wearing socks depicting police officers as pigs, and generally denouncing his country. Which has led to a second career as a leftist spokesman. That is not exactly a contender in the annals of Greatest Sacrifice Ever.

Further, Nike’s tag line, “Believe in something,” naturally raises the question: Does it matter what you believe in? Any normal person would say that it does. After all, the worst monsters in human history–Mao, Stalin, Lenin, Nero, Hitler, Amin, bin Laden, Castro–all believed in something. It was just the wrong thing.

I am so disappointed. I don’t shop at Target or JC Pennies or drink Starbucks’ products. So, too it is with Nike. I’ve had no interest in their products in decades. So, yet again, I am deprived of the joy of not spending my money with a company I disagree with.

I have no doubt that Nike ran the numbers before they ran the ad. I’m sure they calculated that they would sell more shoes and aren’t even slightly worried about those they knew they would offend.

Like the 2016 pollsters I think Nike is in for a big surprise.
If they weren’t brain dead they could have learned from Dick Sports, Target, Macy’s etc.

I think they did it to draw attention away from the breaking story of their corporate abuse of women.

Short the stock. That’s what all the Nike executives and their friends who got in on the ground floor will probably do.

I believe I am correct in saying NIKE is headquartered in Oregon.

If so, this is what happens when the a person is surrounded by leftists. They begin to think that the whole world believes the same as they do.

Who gives a damn about the 30th Anniversary of the “Just Do It” ad campaign?

Suddenly, this is all over the news.

They are exploiting the controversy to attract attention to their next big ad campaign.

I would say it would cost them my business, but why would I ever pay that much for stylish sneakers? I’m just going to dye them green by mowing the lawn, anyway...

I would agree...they know that 10 to 15 percent of the market will dissolve its relationship with them, and they think got the other folks figured out.

I typically buy two to three Nike t-shirts every year. I’m finished with them, and by next spring...I’ll dump my t-shirts left and buy a fresh batch (probably Puma or Adidas) and move on.

I think this is such an important point. Thank you for making it.

Wish I bought over priced Nikes so I could never buy another pair. But, alas, I’ve never been a customer so have never been mugged over them. It’ll be a good day when Nike goes under.

“I have no doubt that Nike ran the numbers before they ran the ad. I’m sure they calculated that they would sell more shoes and aren’t even slightly worried about those they knew they would offend.”

The ad has nothing to do with sales. It has to do with knocking the sexual assault lawsuit against Nike executives off the front page that came out today.
