Several days ago it was reported that astronauts found a hole in the Russian segment of the International Space Station that was leaking air. One of the astronauts plugged the hole with his own finger before sealing the hole with a nylon ribbon to stabilise pressure on board the ISS. The hole posed no threat to the crew, but it had to be fixed.

According to updated information, the 2-millimeter (0.08-inch) hole appeared in the spaceship when the Soyuz was being built. Reportedly, an employee made a mistake, but it was decided to fix the problem with the help of glue. When it space, the glue plug reduced in size and popped out.

Can’t recall the name of the old science fiction short story where the guy plugged the hole by sitting on it.

Robert Heinlein's "Farmer in the Sky". He put either a pile of clothing or a pillow on the hole, then sat on it.

After our ship blew up because of an "o" ring, I wouldn't say too much.

And of course it says Russia....who else do you think made it?

That was one of Robert Heinlein’s stories, but I can’t recall the title.

Ivan Engineering at its best.

Still the only game in town, for now at least.

I was auditing a safety shutdown PLC program done by a Russian engineer for a chemical plant near Houston. No documentation at all.
He placed his arms on the drawing and said “My job is just to turn this Boolean diagram into ladder logic”. He says this in front of the client’s engineer. No rung comments, no element descriptors. I had to do some reverse engineering of his code, and found errors. His response? “BFD”. Again, in front of the client. I had a few choice words for him in Russian, which got his attention. The client told me “He’s outa here. I think you can fix the program and get it right.”

Years ago, Ford had a very quiet but serious recall on two days of production on Crown Victoria.

The technician installing the windshield was supposed to apply a cleaner then a primer before the windshield adhesive. To go faster, he mixed cleaner and primer into one easy application.

NHTSA arrived to do a gas tank leak test which involved rolling a car over in a rack. When the windshield fell out, some guys got real worried.

Major league liability in play.

FTA: One of the astronauts plugged the hole with his own finger

I read a science fiction story once where a astronaut had to sit on a larger hole to keep the air from escaping.
He ahem suffered some frostbite.
