A massive fire has broken out at Brazils National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, engulfing the entire building, just months after the museum marked its 200th anniversary.
The incident began on early Sunday afternoon when a fire erupted in the three-story building. Footage broadcast on Brazilian TV showed that the fire had spread throughout all floors of the building.
It was not immediately known if anyone was injured, but the fire broke out when the museum was closed.

It looks like a total loss from the photos, a tragic loss of history.

That is really sad. OTOH - it said Natural History. Around here we have really cool ones, and they are my favorite over the cultural museums that hold the artwork and stuff. But - I’d rather have my favorite museum of dinosaur bones and stuffed animals burn than the one with all of the artwork.
Hard to believe that they didn't have automatic sprinkler systems to stop this sort of thing.

It’s so large and out of control that I have to wonder if it wasn’t deliberately set.

Bad wiring and no sprinklers prossibly.
Of course if it was torched, then it may have been to conceal a heist.

Thanks for posting the photo, I don’t hold out much hope for anything surviving that.

Pitch for a detective novel:
A fireman sets the fire. All that stands between him and being a millionaire is to be assured, in one way or another, exactly what floor of priceless museum valuables he will be assigned to — whilst all electricity is turned off, and all other theft-protection barriers are in flames.

Oh man - so this wasn’t just a “natural” history museum. That is really tragic that so many things from the old and foreign cultures are now gone. I’m always amazed to look at some of the really old stuff and see how good it was, and think of what it must have taken to design and make something so beautiful way back when.
The museum in Taiwan is REALLY mind blowing. The detail and beauty of stuff from 900 BC. and earlier.
