Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.

Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.

Hey there, radu!

He only emptied one half of one tenth inch this morning. LOL! But the 1/2 inch last night was GREAT! We have more forecast for the week, but who knows.

Hope your day went well. Has it cooled off a bit? It was REALLY nice here.

Hey there, Kathy!

Yes, got a good night’s sleep and have taken it a little easy today. Just light housework and chatted on the phone for a while with a friend in FL. The cool thing is she got her cell phone when she lived here and still has the ph.# .... not long-distance! We were able to catch up on a lot of stuff.

Nice that you’ll have a day all for yourself tomorrow. I hope the weather behaves like it has the last two days. It might be a bit late to plant grass seed. If it comes up, it won’t have time to get established before the cold weather hits. Might want to save the seed for next spring. Glad you’ve gotten those two trees taken out so you can have more green across the lawn next year.

Not as late as yesterday but still late for you. LOL! Bet you feel much better for it. It sounds like your day went quite well. Got everything done with plenty of time to relax.

Well drat. It looked like y’all might have been getting decent rain late last night. But every little bit counts!

No rain here today. It was just hot and muggy. Even with a stiff breeze blowing it wasn’t comfortable outside. Pretty much what we can expect all week though there might be a stray shower here and there.

I had hoped for more, but I guess hubby has to mow tomorrow, so probably don’t need any more till that’s done. LOL!

I wish your “muggy” would just go away! You’ve got to be soooo tired of it. Hope things change soon...without the chill that will eventually happen. You need some nice early fall weather. :)

You, too, Kathy! Did you get to chill today? Any cool plans for tomorrow?

Your hubby probably didn’t appreciate the rain as much as you BECAUSE of the need to mow. LOL!

Muggy doesn’t really go away here. We just wait until the temps drop enough to make it more comfortable outside.
Not sure what to expect as far as fall goes this year. Farmer’s Almanac predicts a warm and wet winter for us so we might not cool off for a while yet. *sigh*

Ugh...”warm and wet” translates “muggy” to me, so I feel for ya!

I talked him out of mowing yesterday, because he had just spent the morning working at the church building. I told him it would be cooler tomorrow. Geez...I hope I am right. LOL!

LOL! Warm won’t necessarily be warm as in comfortable. Just warmer than average. We’ll still be chilly and have cold snaps aplenty. Just no super-cold temps .... IF they’re correct. Humidity makes it feel colder.

Uh oh. Sure hope it’s coolish tomorrow or you’ll be in trouble with your hubby! :-)

Well, good for you for putting it off. You can do laundry while you finish up the homework...and then have the rest of the day to celebrate. :)

If you have Amazon Prime, you might like Jack Ryan. It’s pretty good. If you like that sort of thing.
