I'm 28, Have $100K In Student Loan Debt, & I Can't Find A Full-Time Job

For Alexandria Butler-McDow, 28, going to university didn’t provide the freedom and financial security she'd hoped for. After graduating with an associate’s degree from the California Culinary Academy (CCA) in San Francisco, CA, in 2008, Butler-McDow struggled to find a job that would allow her to support herself and her disabled mother while also paying off her enormous student loan bill.

Hopeful that a more advanced degree would help her make more money and better manage her debt, Butler-McDow went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in culinary nutrition, concentrating on clinical dietetics at Johnson and Wales University (JWU) in Providence, RI. By the time she had finished her second degree, Butler-McDow was even deeper in debt.

Now, nearly four years after graduating with her second degree, Butler-McDow (better known as Chef Alexandria at Better Taste Productions) is a Los Angeles-based chef and culinary consultant focusing on nutrition and education — and she is still six figures in debt. Though she has defaulted on her loans and deferred some of her payments, the end of this ordeal is still out of her reach. “We are sold the notion that getting an education is what will improve our socioeconomic standing,” Butler-McDow told Refinery29. “My degrees were supposed to bring me out of poverty but they’ve just anchored me.” ...

Pay for Their College and Lose Your House: Ameritech Financial Discusses Parents’ Dilemmas With Student Loans!

SOURCE Ameritech Financial

ROHNERT PARK, Calif., Aug. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Years ago, sending children to college was a rite of passage for middle and upper-middle-class Americans. Today, it has become akin to a death knell because parents face an increased risk of foreclosure if they pay for their kids’ college. Ameritech Financial, a document preparation company that assists borrowers in applying for various federal student loan repayment programs, doesn’t want Americans to feel like they are out of options. In fact, student loan borrowers could greatly benefit from applying for income-driven repayment plans (IDRs) that may reduce their monthly student loan payments.

“Parents may be inclined to apply for parent PLUS loans because they think their kids aren’t ready to deal with the financial consequences of missing payments on loans, or worse,” noted Tom Knickerbocker, executive vice president of Ameritech Financial. “We advise parents to think carefully about their financial situation before they take out any loans for their student’s college education. It could benefit them to consult a financial expert beforehand.”

Part of the problem is that raising a child to the age of 18 costs, on average, $233,610. Add college to that amount and it is no wonder parents in the 21st century are especially feeling a financial strain, and may even lose their houses. For example, researchers discovered “a 1 percent increase in college attendance could be expected to lead to between 11,200 and 27,400 additional foreclosures.” Furthermore, the same study revealed middle-income and top-earning households were both affected by “elevated foreclosures” due to sending their kids off to college.

I love Dave Ramsey - I would love to see this girl call him. I’m shocked at the number of kids that fall into student loan debt (my kids went to Community college). Congrats on being debt free !!!

She shoulda brought this up before she picked her major. You don’t select an occupation then demand that society makes it lucrative; it’s the other way around.

“I was working minimum wage and trying to make my payments”

Every time I see a cook job advertised, it’s minimum wage.

Why did she think junior college was her ticket to riches?

apprentice in several restaurant kitchens and learn how to cook

Or even see if you have an aptitude for it.

I can think of a dozen things you could send me to the best schools for and I'd never be able to compete with the guy/gal who just has a gift for it, love for it, etc.

She could have joined the military for a few years, maybe become a cook in the military, and then get a paid tuition for her cooking classes, PLUS get a true sense of life just by being in the military.

Her failure to plan ahead is not our problem. It is hers and hers alone. Acting on liberal thinking results in negative consequences. Every time.

Most kids who go to culinary school do so because they love cooking. I was an older person in a VERY young class (mostly 18 year olds) who were absolutely obsessed with food preparation. It’s all they thought about. I hope most of them know it is a difficult career choice.

You turn every thread you’re on into some stupid attack on women. Seriously, what’s your problem?

Look at my posting history, on a wide variety of topics. You only notice those postings of mine which you choose to take offense with.

You may choose to disagree with my comment of #157 ("She might have been far better off skipping college entirely, finding a guy interested in marrying her, and trying to be a good housewife."), but I still maintain that it would have had a high probability of her being in a better condition than culinary school left her.
