Liz Peek: Mr. Trump, make a magnanimous gesture and award McCain the Medal of Honor
Fox News ^ | Liz Peek

President Trump should award John McCain, who died on Saturday, the Medal of Honor. The posthumous award would recognize the senator’s extraordinary heroism during his five years of captivity in North Vietnam, when he was tortured mercilessly, leaving him disabled for life. The compassionate and respectful gesture might also help to heal some deep wounds in the Republican Party. McCain was a Navy fighter pilot when his plane was shot down on a mission over the North Vietnamese capital of Hanoi in 1967. He fractured both arms and one leg when he was ejected from his jet and nearly drowned when he parachuted into a lake. North Vietnamese pulled the badly injured McCain from the lake and attacked him. One bayonetted him and crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt.

Absolutely not. I said a prayer for him. But I object to any public recognition.

Put his ashes into a shell casing and bomb Iran with it.

Does this dittz have the slightest clue what the MOH is awarded for?

Liberals likely think it is a glorified participation award, just a bit more shiny.

Is she aware of the treasonous stunts McStain pulled off and later had classified status stamped on the records to protect his political aspirations?

Liz, you ignorant slut. Do you even know the process for awarding the MOH? Do you know that it is not the president’s decision?
Last question: Where’s my sandwich?

One can be magnanimous without being stupid.

——Does this woman have a clue what the Medal of Honor is? How does she dare even make a suggestion like that?——

My exact thought....

If he deserved that honor, (he doesn’t ) he missed his chance with six Presidents to honor him...

Must be a good reason why...

I have read that he behaved dishonorably. I will not criticize him for that as it must have been awful.

I would reserve any medals for those who didn’t give in.

During the War Between the States, Confederate POWs were given the chance to get out of the awful conditions and fight Indians out West. Some did and some refused. Those who refused held no ill will towards those who joined.

I miss the days afterTeddy Kennedy bit the big one. I could tune out the fluffy b.s. about him that I knew not to be true. Now that McCain is dead, I can’t escape it.

The bastard is still dead. He ain’t getting any better.

He did absolutely nothing in the Senate over all those decades. Hi sorry most memorable “accomplishment” was being a member of the “Keating 5.” He was a worthless sack of shee-it.

Well FDR gave one to MacArthur after his incompetent performance in the Philippines in 1941-1942 solely for PR reasons. So there is precedent.

(Ironically Douglas MacArthur did deserve one for bravery during an action in Mexico as part of the hunt for Pancho Villa but it was not awarded.)

No to McCain. But here's a POW who really deserved the Medal of Honor:

James Stockdale's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while senior naval officer in the Prisoner of War camps of North Vietnam. Recognized by his captors as the leader in the Prisoners' of War resistance to interrogation and in their refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation, Rear Adm. Stockdale was singled out for interrogation and attendant torture after he was detected in a covert communications attempt. Sensing the start of another purge, and aware that his earlier efforts at self-disfiguration to dissuade his captors from exploiting him for propaganda purposes had resulted in cruel and agonizing punishment, Rear Adm. Stockdale resolved to make himself a symbol of resistance regardless of personal sacrifice. He deliberately inflicted a near-mortal wound to his person in order to convince his captors of his willingness to give up his life rather than capitulate. He was subsequently discovered and revived by the North Vietnamese who, convinced of his indomitable spirit, abated in their employment of excessive harassment and torture toward all of the Prisoners of War. By his heroic action, at great peril to himself, he earned the everlasting gratitude of his fellow prisoners and of his country. Rear Adm. Stockdale's valiant leadership and extraordinary courage in a hostile environment sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Now compare that to McCain's behavior as POW.

A grievous slight to the fallen.

What, pray tell, is the Medal of Honor worth if it is given out as a “gesture”?

Honor is sacred, not a pr gesture. This is nauseating.
