A shining effigy of controversial Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has suddenly appeared in southwestern Germanyto the surprise and chagrin of locals.
The 13-foot statue, painted gold, depicts Erdogan with his hand, outstretched and pointing at the horizon. Erdogan is a divisive figure in Germanywhich has a diaspora of around 3 million people of Turkish nationality or descentand when residents of Wiesbaden, 20 miles west of Frankfurt, woke up to a monument honoring the man, they had questions for city officials.
"We have received calls from a string of irritated citizensit is not clear to people that it is part of the Biennale," a spokesperson for the city said of the statue, according to German news agency DPA, referring to the ongoing art festival in town.
The golden Erdogan figure is an installation that is part of the festival, known as the Wiesbaden Biennale for Contemporary Art, though city officials also had no specific knowledge that the statue would pop up in town. The festivals theme this year is "bad news" and besides having already inflamed public opinion in Germany with strong remarks and accusations, Erdogan is set to make headlines again when he visits Berlin next month.

Or pig blood?
I’ve read that Gomer could be Turkey, Russia, or Eastern Europe.
Whatever nation it is, it has to be a Caucasian nation and non-Arabic - Gomer was a son of Japheth.
Is he giving the finger?
They’re cursing in English?
I would have expected to see a German oath.
They may be too afraid to say it straight out in Turkish.
Dunno why that is.
Statues aren’t just a pile of metal that has been chiseled. It is a symbol, designed to provoke admiration in the public. For some reason, Germany seems to feel that they should admire the head of a repressive *slamic state which would like nothing better than to see all Germans bowing down in a mosque.
It was a guess.
Just reminded me of the passage where he builds the statue and demands people worship it.
I also believe that he will remain hidden until the time comes for him to appear on the world stage and I also think it’s going to be someone unexpected.
I hope I’m not around when the people are demanded to worship it.
Past history has demonstrated that the German people are intelligent, industrious, frugal and all too willing to accept orders from the top.
The latter in my opinion is a cultural flaw that brought us 2 world wars.
My roots are largely English and Scotch/Irish, with strains of Swede and German ancestry.
It is the index finger, signifying 1 God (he thinks it’s Allah).
But as far as we are concerned it might as well be the middle one.
Yep, I saw it yesterday. Bus passed it...big crowd of Turks standing there and gazing at it. Cops all standing there to protect (probably six to eight). City authorities didn’t know it was going to be Erdogan.
