SOUTH SALT LAKE — A South Jordan man faces a criminal charge after police say he threatened to commit a mass shooting at a small South Salt Lake school using a gun made from a 3D printer.

Austin James David West, 23, was charged Aug. 9 in South Salt Lake Justice Court with making a threat of violence, a class B misdemeanor.

On Aug. 8, West was arrested at his home after he talked with another student "about using a gun to shoot students at Broadview University," according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

"The statements were forwarded to the university, which caused the university dean to be fearful that a school shooting was actually going to take place. An email had to be sent to faculty and students warning them of the threat of a shooting at the school. The school chose to remain open," the report states.

West sent several texts to another student he has known for several years, stating that he would commit a shooting that "people would be talking about," according to a search warrant affidavit unsealed Tuesday in 3rd District Court.

"The text messages sent by the suspect reference killing people with a 3D printed gun so the gun could not be traced back to him. The message contained images of what appears to be a male in a video holding a rifle while standing over another male that is lying on the ground," the warrant states.

Technical question: How many rounds can be fired through a plastic gun before it is likely to blow up or melt?

If Bruce Cockburn had a rocket launcher, some son of a bitch would die. But he didn’t have a rocket launcher.

This sounds like an idiot or a hoax. From what I have read, 3D printed guns are at a primitive stage and are basically good for one shot or one shot at a time with manual reloading, if they work without blowing up at all.

How very convenient. And for all the crowing about gun tracing. That’s an almost useless concept in solving homicides. Never works outside of a 1950s film.

3D printers can do metals too.

Aren't consumer-grade 3D printers limited to metal-loaded plastic? Fibers, powders and the like, embedded in plastic?

Although, I've read there are some metallized professional rigs which print heavily loaded powders which are subsequently heat treated to provide an almost pure metal product.

It's just that after reading about how many psi are generated by different rounds, and how barrels are carefully designed to avoid overpressure, I find it hard to take the reliability of the printed chamber and barrel seriously.

It probably depends on multiple factors before it deforms:

The gun's barrel began to melt after about 18 shots if it wasn't allowed to cool before firing, according to Wired. In total, he said he fired more than 800 rounds.

There are 400 Million guns in America, yet loopy liberals think that stopping the 3-D printing of guns will have a significant impact on the ability of violent nutjobs to get their hands on one.

Libtardation is far more dangerous to America, than 3-D guns are.
