McCain: The Most Reprehensible of the Keating Five [1989 opinion]
The Phoenix New imes ^ | 11/29/1989 | Tomas Fitzpatrick

Posted on 08/27/2018 6:16:07 AM PDT by advance_copy

You're John McCain, a fallen hero who wanted to become president so desperately that you sold yourself to Charlie Keating, the wealthy con man who bears such an incredible resemblance to The Joker.

Obviously, Keating thought you could make it to the White House, too.

He poured $112,000 into your political campaigns. He became your friend. He threw fund raisers in your honor. He even made a sweet shopping-center investment deal for your wife, Cindy. Your father-in-law, Jim Hensley, was cut in on the deal, too.

Nothing was too good for you. Why not? Keating saw you as a prime investment that would pay off in the future.

[Snip]

So what if he gave you $112,000? Just keep smiling at the cameras and saying you did nothing wrong.

Maybe the voters will understand you took those tiring trips to Charlie's place in the Bahamas in their behalf. Certainly, they can understand you wanted to take your family along. A senator deserves to travel on private jets, removed from the awful crush of public transportation.

You sought out a master criminal like Keating and became his friend. Now you've discarded him. It shouldn't be surprising that you are now in the process of selling out your senatorial accomplices.

You're John McCain, clearly the guiltiest, most culpable and reprehensible of the Keating Five. But you know the power of television and you realize this is the only way you can possibly save your political career.

Ah, reminiscing on how the great Senator was able to save his own political hide.

If you can’t say something good about someone, it’s better not to say anything at all.

That said, here’s what I’ ve got to say about John McCain:
“ “.

His funereal arrangements are so over the top. He was not president and not admired by all as the press is trying so hard to portray. My TV will be off until it’s all over.

The writer forgot to mention McCain pushed for property rental laws in Sedona so his hotel real estate holdings were not damaged.

Local news (NBC affiliate) this morning said the flag at the White House was still at full staff, not half staff for McCain....

I thought, “So???”

I will only say one thing, John McCain saved me in 2008 from not voting for the first time when he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate. Thank you Senator McCain for allowing me to happily pull the Republican lever in the 2008 Presidential race....

My error, McCain’s influence with rental rates in Sedona happened after 1989.

Amen.......... us, too.

I even got an “email” from the McCain Family - you know, my name is on some GOP email listings. THAT email said such gushing tripe about him, like he was a saint.

Have family in AZ. They cannot stand the whole situation either. Reminds me of Teddy the swimmer, waitress sandwiches, unhinged marriage, drunk so often, “don’t you know who I am” kids... barf alert x 100 for them all.

Please know - this is not sitting well in flyover country. I hope he rests in peace. He cannot harm us any longer.

His funeral arrangements really are over the top. Just like for Ted Kennedy (the prime difference is that McCain didn’t drown a girl) who died nine years ago, same date.

It is a direct line from Keating to McCain’s unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment, McCain/Feingold. It was his spiteful retribution for all the criticism he received for his role in Keating.

Wont change a thing!

Well, it might make it slightly more difficult to get (re)elected when you are running for a different office than when you are an incumbent, but for the most part, if you become a perennial (career) politician with a recognizable (brand) name, you tend to steam roll the unknowns.

Not only do lobbies invest in you, but the massive and almost inherently corrupt party apparatus both works for your re-election and uses you for political clout, power, and financial gain... but even that doesn’t go toward speaking on those backroom deals that everyone knows get made. The rich and powerful moguls and corporations can benefit from political connections, and politicians sure do love the kind of money that virtually nothing to massive bankrolls. How do we know those (formerly smokey) backroom deals happen. Look at how many career politicians retire to executive board rooms, wall street consultant positions, or get on the media dime (this is probably the least lucrative option). Is it really so hard to believe that promises like those to Keating are common?

I would suggest that it’s the virtuous who don’t survive politics. The system will cast you aside. It’s very nature is to support those who support it. The methods of that two way support are not all above board

Awfully busy guy. Seemed to be everywhere all the time. Pretty frenetic lifestyle.. How did he have any time left to be a dad and husband? Didn’t know when to hang up the gloves.
