British retirees thinking of moving to the sun-soaked south of Italy could soon be able to take advantage of a massive tax break that is being mooted by the countrys new government.
The populist administration hopes to reverse the chronic population decline of Italys southern regions by luring people to settle there with the promise of paying no taxes for 10 years.
The scheme will be open not only to Italians but to foreigners too, it is envisaged.
The idea has been proposed by The League, the hard-Right party which makes up one half of the coalition which came to power in June.
It will initially focus on three struggling regions Sardinia, Sicily and Calabria.
We think it could appeal to foreigners Italy is a beautiful country, said Alberto Brambilla, economic adviser to Matteo Salvini, the interior minister and head of The League.
Were trying to provide an incentive for the transfer of older people (towards the south), Mr Brambilla, who came up with the idea, told La Repubblica newspaper.
People of retirement age will be spared paying any taxes for a decade as long as they live for more than six months in their new home.
The average couple would spend 20,000-25,000 a year, helping to boost the local economy, the government calculates.
High unemployment and a lack of jobs means the south struggles to attract people of working age, but luring grey panthers is another matter.
Pensioners with disposable income can look forward to great weather, superb food and property for sale at rock bottom prices.

Smart. People bring wealth. Were i Italian I might wonder why I dont get no taxes for ten years but immigrants do.
Sounds like a good plan.
Having been to the Amalfi Coast last year, it sounds tempting.
“Were i Italian I might wonder why I dont get no taxes for ten years but immigrants do.”
Because they bring money, and with that jobs.
interesting - the Amalfi Coast, soon very soon
Throw in a (young) Sophia Loren look-alike, and I might consider it.
Deport all the Muslim illegals first.
Looking forward to paying an addition $500 in federal taxes this years vs the old tax plan. I get it. Most will benefit, but many retirees did not.
Maybe I should move to Italy! Sounds lovely!

When something sounds too good to be true...
There are reasons that people leave these regions. When I worked in Milan, the locals had a saying, something like, “The north [of Italy] creates the wealth, the south syphons it off”
“Throw in a (young) Sophia Loren look-alike, and I might consider it.”
I recently saw a photo of the original, present day Loren and she has plastic-surged well. Best job I’ve ever seen.
Unless you've spent time in southern Italy.
That is true.
However, as retirees, they will not be looking for jobs.
The hope is they will spend their money instead.
Do jobs follow money; or is it the other way around?
That is true.

That’s how South Florida was initially populated. The local governments wanted their Social Security checks.
The way to reverse a declining population is not by bringing in old foreigners. It is to encourage young Italians to marry and have lots of kids. They need a tax cut or a credit to do THAT.
Italy is broke. I don’t know where they’d get the money to do this unless the EU cuts them a check.
Love to. But if I have to live amongst hoards of dangerous illegal criminal aliens, I might as well stay here in the good old USofA.
