Nicholas Oresko (January 18, 1917 – October 4, 2013) was a United States Army veteran and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions on 23 January 1945, during World War II.

Born on January 18, 1917, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Oresko later joined the Army from that city in March 1942. He was sent to Europe and arrived in France in September 1944, three months after the Normandy landings, as a platoon sergeant in Company C, 302nd Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division. His unit spent the next several months mopping up pockets of German soldiers who had been bypassed in the Allies' initial push through the northern part of France. In December 1944 they were redeployed to replace the 90th Infantry Division as part of Patton's 3d Army. The 94th assumed positions opposite the Westwall and the German 11th Panzer Division. On January 23, 1945, near Tettingen, Germany, Oresko, by then a master sergeant, single-handedly defeated a German bunker, was seriously wounded, and then destroyed a second bunker despite his injuries. For his heroic actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor nine months later, on October 30, 1945. The medal was formally presented to him by President Harry Truman during a ceremony at the White House. Following the death of Barney F. Hajiro in January 2011, Oresko became the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient. Oresko lived in Cresskill, New Jersey. Bayonne School #14 was renamed in his honor in July 2010. Oresko died while undergoing surgery for a broken femur on October 4, 2013. He was 96 years old.

Master Sergeant Oresko's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

M/Sgt. Oresko was a platoon leader with Company C, in an attack against strong enemy positions. Deadly automatic fire from the flanks pinned down his unit. Realizing that a machine gun in a nearby bunker must be eliminated, he swiftly worked ahead alone, braving bullets which struck about him, until close enough to throw a grenade into the German position. He rushed the bunker and, with pointblank rifle fire, killed all the hostile occupants who survived the grenade blast. Another machine gun opened up on him, knocking him down and seriously wounding him in the hip. Refusing to withdraw from the battle, he placed himself at the head of his platoon to continue the assault. As withering machine gun and rifle fire swept the area, he struck out alone in advance of his men to a second bunker. With a grenade, he crippled the dug-in machine gun defending this position and then wiped out the troops manning it with his rifle, completing his second self-imposed, 1-man attack. Although weak from loss of blood, he refused to be evacuated until assured the mission was successfully accomplished. Through quick thinking, indomitable courage, and unswerving devotion to the attack in the face of bitter resistance and while wounded, M/Sgt. Oresko killed 12 Germans, prevented a delay in the assault, and made it possible for Company C to obtain its objective with minimum casualties.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Nice of him to let you sleep most of the night at least. Could have been worse. LOL

Pretty hot here today but not as hot as your area. Felt close, though, due to the humidity. I stayed inside where it’s cool.

Moogly’s doing ok. She wasn’t feeling too hot earlier but is apparently feeling better now. She was just at the dry food dish eating so whatever was ailing her has passed. This will probably be the norm from here on out - - good days and not so good days but overall things are good.

Was Ghost around today? Is he still limping or does his foot seem better now?

OUCH!! 29 degrees???? Too early for that!!!!
Is this the week you’re going up to visit? You betcha you’d better take some winter clothes! LOL

I went to an open mike night, but didn’t end up singing, as riding my motorcycle in the moonlight was more exciting.

Anyway, I got home in time for the canteen, and came in first! How cool is that?

It is! That is when I went last year. A bit of a chill in the early morning, but nice and warm during the day. But our son wanted us to wait till summer tourist season was over so tickets would maybe be cheaper. They weren’t bad.

He did show up today with his limp. The funny guy. He sort of looked at me with this pitiful look and his paw raised....like, can I eat separately from all those kittens. I’m hurting. Yep...I gave him his separate. It was so obvious. LOL!

Glad your girl is feeling somewhat better. I guess just enjoy the good and prepare for the bad days. I’m not telling you something new, I know. :)

You would never think that September is a week off. This heat! We are leaving here on the 15th. Wouldn’t it be weird if it snowed while we were there? LOL!

I think a lady from church might take care of the kitties for me. She has done it before, but there were only the two and they went outside at night and rarely used the litter box. But I’m going to pay her, though she didn’t say to.

I hope your humidity goes down soon. I know how uncomfortable it can be.

I hope not to ever find out about winter up there except from watching the live webcams from around the area. From the warmth of my kitchen. LOL!

Poor ol’ Ghost. Nice you let him enjoy supper out of his own dish this evening. He puts up with enough from those kittens the rest of the day. LOL

Moogly’s off day could have been unrelated to whatever’s going on with her. They all have off days every now and then, just like people do. No worries as long as it isn’t extended.

I was thinking you’d said you were going to WY next month but when you said it would be so cold Tues. night, I thought you were going to be there then. Who knows what the temps will be when you do head up that way? Best to be prepared! Just hope there’s no snow!!

Hope you have someone lined up definitely to take care of the cats well before you head north. “Maybes” are a little nerve-wracking.

The humidity won’t go down any time soon. It’s normal stuff here. The temps going down a little are what we’re waiting for.

Does it get that cold in Ohio?

He’s a good ol’ cat.

I did sort of mislead with my statement. I guess I was saying, if it’s going to get down to 29 this coming week, what the heck is it going to be like in 3 weeks. LOL!

You’re right. When the temp does finally start down, the humidity won’t be as bad, or at least it won’t be so uncomfortable.

How are the soy beans doing? Are they on schedule for growth?
