Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) will wait until the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is buried before naming his successor.
"Out of respect for the life and legacy of Senator John McCain and his family, Governor Ducey will not be making any announcements about an appointment until after the Senator is laid to rest, Ducey's senior adviser Daniel Ruiz II said in a statement to the Arizona Republic. "Now is a time for remembering and honoring a consequential life well lived."
McCain died Saturday at 81 after a fight with brain cancer. His death came after his family announced Friday that they would be discontinuing treatment for the longtime senator.
Ducey is tasked with appointing McCains successor under Arizona state law. The successor will fill McCains seat until 2020, when a special election will be held to finish the term through 2022. There will then be an election for a full six-year term in 2022.
The Arizona Republic listed potential appointees on Friday including Cindy McCain, McCains wife, and Kirm Adams, the chief of staff for Ducey.
He was a giant. An icon. An American hero. But here at home, we are most proud to call him a fellow Arizonan," Ducey wrote in a statement after McCain's death. "Like so many of us, he was not born here, but his spirit, service and fierce independence shaped the state with which he became synonymous.
Mine were all beautiful petite Asians so a little slant is expected.

Matt Salmon would be my first choice
If you mean for the Presidency, she's not eligible.
The only one of the kids who is eligible is the pretty one. Tiffany.
But she won't be old enough until 2028.
UGH! Why?
Will the Senate seat still be Republican?
***********************************
Arizona law requires that the Governors appointee be of the same political party as the Senator being replaced. Will the Senate seat still be Republican? So yes, it will be a Republican.
Kyl would be a safe pick and give the AZ GOP time to focus on something else other than McCain and his family
I don’t understand why leaving the seat empty for more time is “respectful”. The Senate is in session and the nation has business. It would have been “respectful” of McCain to resign in June.
A relation of the deceased and a crony of the Governor? Wonderful choices.
A NTYtimes articles also mentions
Former House members John Shadegg and Matt Salmon, obvious chocies.
As well as former Senator Jon Kyl which I didn’t expect. He’s old and has a high-paying private sector job so I think it unlikely.
They say Ducey does not want a mere caretaker, which is good.
Just imagine if the “abolish the 17th amendment” crowd got their way. The AZ legislature would promptly give Meghan McCain the job for life.
“The bidding has begun......”
The bidding began when the cancer was announced, that got some eliminated for being too eager
No mention of Dan Quayle? Or his son Ben, for that matter?
As you may recall, my personal preference would be for Ducey to name Paul Gosar and to have Kelli Ward step in as the GOP nominee for his safe House seat. Of course, Ward would have to lose that Cernovich guy with whom she’s been campaigning this past week.
Dan Quayle ? No. Ben’s too flaky. He should’ve stood his ground in 2012 and ran in the 9th.
I’ve brought up Gosar in the past, but it’s been said he has no interest in the Senate seat.
I’d prefer Ward be appointed to the seat. Otherwise, perhaps John Shadegg.
I typed Ben Quayle into google news, no mentions at all. Which is surprising, he might be a pretty good choice. No mention of Dan either.
