Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) will wait until the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is buried before naming his successor.
"Out of respect for the life and legacy of Senator John McCain and his family, Governor Ducey will not be making any announcements about an appointment until after the Senator is laid to rest, Ducey's senior adviser Daniel Ruiz II said in a statement to the Arizona Republic. "Now is a time for remembering and honoring a consequential life well lived."
McCain died Saturday at 81 after a fight with brain cancer. His death came after his family announced Friday that they would be discontinuing treatment for the longtime senator.
Ducey is tasked with appointing McCains successor under Arizona state law. The successor will fill McCains seat until 2020, when a special election will be held to finish the term through 2022. There will then be an election for a full six-year term in 2022.
The Arizona Republic listed potential appointees on Friday including Cindy McCain, McCains wife, and Kirm Adams, the chief of staff for Ducey.
He was a giant. An icon. An American hero. But here at home, we are most proud to call him a fellow Arizonan," Ducey wrote in a statement after McCain's death. "Like so many of us, he was not born here, but his spirit, service and fierce independence shaped the state with which he became synonymous.
I pretty much agree with your post, but I’m still sticking with my prediction that it will be Meghan, not Cindy.
why wait? seriously. makes no difference to John, the business of the govt keeps going on daily even during the various funeral events. It’s not like this was unexpected andGov not had time to prepare. I think this may reflect badly for Gov down the road. If he’s delaying for family or such that is ridiculous, McCain should have stepped down many months ago then there would have been no need to appoint around the time of his death.
Had McCain stepped down “many months ago,” the seat would have come up in this year’s general election, which would have put one more Republican seat up for grabs in a possible blue wave year. That’s why he held on.
If McCain respected the citizens of Arizona he would have resigned last Fall.
What a load to be waiting to name his replacement.
cremate him and we can pass the urn around.
“What qualifications does Cindy McCain, other than being filthy, filthy rich, have?”
Well, she’s good with finances. She was able to steal money from her own charitable foundation to support her drug addiction. (That’s hard.) She’s got that goin’ for her.
sowhat? that’s more honestfor the people of az and country than this game they played instead..
Does Ducey have a primary Challenger or is he already locked to be the R for November?
Bennett is his primary challenger. No name, no visibility, no war chest.
He has a challenger who is a pretty good guy.
The primary is Tuesday. Hes hoping to skate past the primary and hope that we wont want the dem to take the governorship
Im hoping that President Trump has already contacted him and knows who he will appoint.
I’m still putting my money on Meghan McCain.
If Ducey appoints Cindy, I’ll vote for the open Democrat for AZ Gov in November. America is NOT the land of royalty, although many politicians - and certainly Juan McCain - forget that.
I would have less objection to Meagan but I hate the family dynasty thing. Appoint someone who can run and win in 2020 on their own. Someone with legislative experience who will not become a swamp creature. We have a tough time ahead and we need good strong people who will not be swayed by suckups. We also need a strong ally for President Trump, someone who will fight.
Mainly I am about push for family dynasty, of nepotism. That includes Ivanka.
No more McAn’ts..they suck! ...
Say it loud!
.
Will the Senate seat still be Republican? If not, we may be in real trouble until after November.
I’m pretty sure it will, Ducey is a Repub.
