John McCain's US Senate seat: What happens next?

Governor appoints a new senator

Arizona is one of 36 states where a governor makes an appointment to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Therefore, Gov. Ducey will appoint an interim senator to fill McCain’s seat.

Because McCain was a Republican, state law requires Ducey to appoint a member of the same party — a move that’s critically important for the Trump administration, as the GOP currently holds a bare 51-49 Senate majority.

The newly appointed senator would be in office until the next general election in November 2020. The interim senator would not be obligated to run in that election.

Whomever is elected to the Senate seat in November 2020 would complete McCain's term, which expires in January 2023.

The first concern is: Did McCain officially switch parties at the very end?

My biggest fear is Cindy. At least Meghan has it right on some things, Cindy is a rat.

How long can Governor Ducey delay the announcement by law? He has a primary election this Tuesday!

“The first concern is: Did McCain officially switch parties at the very end? “

It would not matter. AZ law states it has be from the same party the Senator was when elected. I have no doubt McTraitor would have switched otherwise.

I don’t believe he’s required to name a replacement at all, although that would be politically foolish. Ducey has already said a replacement won’t be announced until after the funeral, which might be a week away and after Tuesday’s primary.

There are a number of good people he could appoint. There is enough time left on McCains term that there is no need to appoint a placeholder. I would imagine the good governor has already been contacted by President Trump

It should be someone Arizonans can be proud of.

From LS:

I”ll do this again since some of you apparntly didn’t get the word. I spoke with a source who knows a person at the meeting between Ducey & McTurd’s family a month or so ago. This GOP source said Ducey was NOT going to replace McTurd with a family member.

Further, the source later met with Ducey personally, and it was again reiterated that he would NOT name Cindy or Meghan McTurd to McTurd’s seat.

So just stop.

NOR will he name either Ward or McSally. The timing doesn’t work in the first place. After Tuesday, one of them will have lost the primary. It would be insane to name the loser to a seat where the winner still has to compete and possibly lose. It would be worse to name the winner and then have the senate nominee be someone whom the voters rejected. No win scenario. Ducey will stay away.

NOR will he name a sitting congressman like Biggs (a freshmen? Come on), Schweikert (the likely choice) or Gosar (whom I’m told really doesn’t want the job). ANY Congressman would spark significant anger from all the other supporters in other districts.

THIS IS ALL DONE WITH DUCEY UP FOR REELECTION. He isn’t going to piss off all the Trumpers and AZ GOP.

MOREOVER, this is all going on with a crucial USSC vote coming up, probably after Sept. 17 (hearings begin after Labor Day). We may need that vote, and Ducey will not fiddle around in naming someone.

My guess is he’ll wait until a few days after the funeral. It must be a Republican according to law. We would be lucky if it was Jeff DeWitt, NASA CFO, but I doubt it. I know former US Sen. (a good one) Jon Kyl, and spoke to him some months ago, asking if he felt like entering the McSally/Ward race, and he said no, he was happy as a lobbyist in DC. I bet! So it won’t be Kyl. Brewer? Perhaps-—was well liked as gov.-—but is a Trumper who was snubbed by Ducey at the convention. We’ll see.

I think Arizona law says the appointment must match the party to which the previous senator belonged when they were elected.

Don’t let Meghan fool you, she is just as much an open borders loon as her father. She has been practicing sounding conservative on the View.

Good points, but consider this; McSally will likely win the primary, But will do so in a close race. The combined Ward-Arpaio vote will likely exceed the McSally victory total. That combined vote total represents the Trump supporters of Arizona, if the Ducey then ignores that he will be hurting his future possibilities By angering that wing of the party.

The Conservatives in AZ better get on the telephone 24/7 and give the governor a few choice and informative comments as his next election.

The Chuckey Schumer and his angry “democrats” aren’t going to allow McCain’s replacement to be selected until Cohen gets to go on a book tour, Mueller talks the “judge” into putting Manafort into double secret, solitary confinement and Daniels gets to give everyone in Congress a free Lewinsky.

This of course is fantastic news.

I’m not a Kyl fan, but he seems the most likely, presuming this intel holds. And it could indeed be far worse.

Best of course would be a young and impressive true conservative who would use the leg up for election in 2020 and 2022.

Hayworth is ‘only’ 60 years old. He could keep the seat when 2022 comes around. We’re talking 2 primaries, one on 2020 + 2022. Would he want to put himself through that? I say McSally. Put her ass to work and spit her out if she strays at any point.

He should name former Gov. Jan Brewer, if she is willing and able.

She has already won statewide election.
