John McCain, the longtime senator and 2008 GOP presidential candidate who refused to leave fellow prisoners of war behind to escape years of torture in Vietnam, and whose maverick streak as Arizonas senior statesman at times frustrated fellow Republicans and confounded President Donald Trump, has died, his family confirmed in a statement Saturday.
He was 81and had been diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017.
McCain had decided to discontinue medical treatment for the glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, his family announced on Aug. 24. He had surpassed expectations for his survival, but "the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict," the statement said.

He might have been the poster boy of Republicans who stabbed us in the back but to me the one that really breaks my heart is George W Bush.
There was a time in his life when served this country honorably as a Sailor and a Naval Aviator:
When this life Im in is done,
and at the gates I stand,
my hope is that I answer all
the questions on command.
I doubt Ill be asked of my fame,
or all the things I knew.
Instead, did I witness the rainbows
on rainy days I flew.
The hours logged, the status reached,
the ratings will not matter.
Did I notice the suns rays
on the lakes that scattered.
Or what about the droplets clear,
that spread across my screen?
And the twinkling eyes of student pilots keen?
How fast, how far, how much, how high? I wont be asked these things.
But did I take the time to watch
the moonbeams wash my wings?
And did I see the patchwork fields
the mirrored lakes below?
Or the mountains high and velvet hills? Of these did I behold?
And when the goals are reached at last.
When all the flyings done.
Ill answer with no regret Indeed! I had some fun.
So when these things are asked of me,
and I can reach no higher.
My prayer this day with hands extended, please welcome home this Flyer

Trying to think of a time when SENATOR McCain put country before himself
Well said.
All else notwithstanding (and I am bitterly disappointed in each and every GOP Presidential candidate in this millennium) McCain did go off to VN when others rushed to Canada. And, he does have a family who loved him and who grieve today. May his soul find the eternal peace that avoided him in this life.
Im disgusted by all the celebrating. I was no fan of McCain, but I Im not jumping up and down because hes dead. RIP McCain. I hope he accepted Christ as his savior before he passed away.
You show the same class as our President, who just tweeted his respect and sympathy.
Its a shame that the same cant be done here at FR. Some of these comments are what we would see from the left. I thought we were better than that.
I didnt like McCain politically, but he was still a human being.
“This is the story of Evarra — man —
Maker of Gods in lands beyond the sea.~
Because the city gave him of her gold,
Because the caravans brought turquoises,
Because his life was sheltered by the King,
So that no man should maim him, none should steal,
Or break his rest with babble in the streets
When he was weary after toil, he made
An image of his God in gold and pearl,
With turquoise diadem and human eyes,
A wonder in the sunshine, known afar,
And worshipped by the King; but, drunk with pride,
Because the city bowed to him for God,
He wrote above the shrine: “~Thus Gods are made,
And whoso makes them otherwise shall die.~”
And all the city praised him. . . . Then he died”

Agreed.
Don’t understand what I posted was trashing him. A lot of other posts on this thread are truly trashing him. All I pointed out was the President had tweeted. “Wel may not hear about Rusnsia for a week”. Are you drinking?
Benedict Arnold was an American hero, until he wasn’t.
RIP to a ear hero, but I wont miss what a useful idiot he was for the Democratic Party. Here is hoping Arizonzanans elect a conservative replacement. God help us if they elect a DemocRAT.
Amen.
He’s beinged welcomed in hell by his butt buddy Teddy K. ...

Quoted at our dinner table many a meal!!
Maybe its the cynic in me, but Im wondering if it got too difficult to carry on the charade, so they made the announcement about ceasing treatment yesterday so they could get him out of the basement fridge today.
Nowadays, with the compliance of the media and the family since January, you can keep someone on the tubes (breathing, water, nutrition, waste disposal, even kidney filtration and new blood) for nearly forever.
Then, at some convenient time before the primary (to gain sympathy for the appointed one?), will this give them cover to cover the death as a hero than as piece of hate-filled, anti-Trump lettuce
They always say “it’s hot as H3LL in Arizona... he’ll be fine.
