Not only that, at 73 she was still improving and learning, over when she first sang that aria in public at the Grammys in 1998. She must have taken instruction from an opera coach, or listened to many recordings; in this 2015 version, she added the melodramatic Italianate “sob” in the plaintive passages. Just gorgeous. Her voice was truly unique.

Fletcher Henderson was one of the great bass players, arrangers and bandleaders of his era. Paul Whiteman once said, If Fletch were a white man, hed be a millionaire. By the 1930s, the band sound had changed quite a bit. This is another look into musical history.

You will be surprised at some of the things I've got scheduled for tomorrow night. Items that are pure history.
When we get to 1933 in a few weeks, Harry Warren was so hot that Warner Brothers produced an entire short subject about him.

That 1951 song was banned by a lot of radio stations.
In 1980, when I was programming an oldies weekend at KASH in Eugene (OR), I needed something to start the weekend and get everybody in the right mood. I picked this song.

Hi-dee-hi-dee-hi-dee-hi! It was inevitable that Cab would turn his attention to this classic bit of 1920s jazz. The scat vocal is classic.
