THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
WHERE THE SHY LITTLE VIOLETS GROW
By this time George Olsen had Harry in his sights as a great songwriter. This was another hit from 1928, and Gus Kahn was the lyricist. If you have a good ear, you can hear the germ of the 1930s Warner Brothers sound in this recording.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
WHERE THE SHY LITTLE VIOLETS GROW
It was called hillbilly music in those days, long before someone came up with the term Country & Western. This is an arrangement from 1928 featuring a fascinating cross between country and blues well before Hank Williams made it his personal territory. You can actually hear the lyrics clearly.

In the late Sixties, "Good Golly, Miss Molly" was banned from AM radio by many stations. The problem was the line, "Sure likes to ball." In 1958, the verb "to ball" meant to have a ball, to have a good time. By 1968, the verb "to ball" meant to have sexual relations.
Today, with the High Ebonic verb "to bone" having replaced "to ball," there is no longer a problem.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
WHERE THE SWEET FORGET-ME-NOTS REMEMBER
This 1929 recording is most notable for Tommy Dorsey playing trombone in the years before he founded his own band. Its a glimpse into late 1920s dance band music. Mort Dixon wrote the lyrics.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
SWEET AND LOW: CHEERFUL LITTLE EARFUL
Harrys earlier work with Billy Rose finally paid off in 1930 when Billy included a Harry Warren song in his Broadway revue. Billy brought in Ira Gershwin to work on the lyrics but also plugged his own name into the lyricist box as a kind of extortion. Ira usually worked with his brother George, so this was a major coup for Billy.
Even though its not digitally re-mastered, the recording is of exceptional quality with wonderful sound. Thats Ruth Etting on vocals.

Watch that 1957 movie the next time it shows up on TCM. You can see how 20th Century Fox used the film to plant the memes that defined the sexual changes of the 1960s.
