The nation's largest grocery chain will be plastic-bag free at all of its nearly 2,800 stores by 2025.
Kroger Co., which orders about 6 billion bags each year, will begin phasing out their use immediately at one of its chains based in Seattle, a city that has been proactive on reducing plastic use.
The company, based in Cincinnati, operates 2,779 stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia, serving almost 9 million people daily through two dozen different grocery chains. Kroger is seeking customer feedback and will be working with outside groups throughout the transition. It will begin phasing out plastic bag use Thursday at its QFC stores in and around Seattle. It expects to be plastic-bag free at the chain next year. "We listen very closely to our customers and our communities, and we agree with their growing concerns," said Mike Donnelly, Kroger's chief operating officer. "That's why, starting today at QFC, we will begin the transition to more sustainable options.

We have a SUPER-DUPER Walmart but it doesn’t have the pick-up available yet. We have an older farming population, so I’ll bet they’re considering it, at least. Our Farm & Fleet has it! Comes in handy for big bags of dog food and oats for the mule. Hey! I should ride him into town and load up his saddle bags; he could stand to pay his way a little; useless hay-burner that he is. ;)
Mom gave me one. Don’t know how I lived without it! :)
I hear that! Beau is AWFU about washing out his big tote that he takes on job sites to hold his thermos, lunch box and water bottles. I FINALLY got to launder it the other week - had to wrestle him down and physically TAKE if from him like a toddler’s ‘binky,’ LOL!
And, yes. He did whine and cry the whole time it was in the wash. A six-foot-three, 220 lb. TODDLER! In his defense, he did NOT suck his thumb. *SMIRK*
Good. I hate plastic bags. People are not intelligent enough to be responsible with them.
I’m a fan of almost all things Singapore. When people could not be responsible enough to not dispose of their chewing gum on the floors and concrete of the new mass transit system Singapore outlawed chewing gum. Except for smuggling and contraband, problem solved.
I also hate styrofoam boxes and cups of all sorts. They never degrade and they litter the roadways along with the other trash discarded by the animals that pass for people who live with us.
I used to live in NYC. Brown paper bags were what was used in delis, groceries and supermarkets. Then in the early 70s I started to see orange plastic bags...in Chinatown...nowhere else at first. The next area I spotted them was in an Indian community in Queens. After that, they spread like the plague in many different colors.
Some would answer, "Save a tree...plastic."
I woud say, "Save the dinosaurs...paper."
If the paper is as flimsy as it at some stores, it’ll start to break down before you leave the parking lot. If it’s like Braums or Cracker Barrel, it’ll take years to dissolve.
I prefer paper. Or are they going to demand we bring our own cloth bags? Hehehe. Maybe I’ll order a gross of paper bags, and bring my own. Fortunately, I don’t live in a state that will arrest me for that. I’m no tree hugger, but I HATE plastic. I only use it when I have to.
One quart waxed cardboard milk containers, with the re-closable flip top opening. We used to save them to make fire starters for the coal furnace or on BSA hikes. ;)

Many, many, many moons ago I worked at Safeway when the very first plastic bags came out. They were absolutely horrible, and spawned the now defunct ‘paper or plastic.’ The original ‘reason’ for the plastic was to ‘save the trees.’ I tell people that we can grow trees like we grow corn.
AND they are great for picking up dog poop and cleaning out the litter box. Oh, wait I bet there wil be bags we can “buy” for that.
How convenient that Kroger sells those “reusable” bags.
I’m just going to save every plastic bag I get between now and then, and take my own. I walk with a cane, and cannot carry two, paper, bags as I need one arm free.
WIth the bags, I can drape two or three on one arm, at at least one or two on the handle of my cane.
Or, I could just quit shopping there.
Grocery prices are rising in order to make that possible.
They probably have millions in storage and are under contract for a number of years.
Most likely they have renegotiated the contracts for the phase out.

Continental Can used to grow trees everywhere for it’s paper packaging division. They let responsible hunters use the land for deer hunting.

I imagine all grocery retailers will eventually go back to paper. Some may offer plastic for folks like you.

If they made the decision then they did not want customer feedback.
