Consumer spending is back and has never been better as far as Target CEO Brian Cornell is concerned.
"There's no doubt that, like others, we're currently benefiting from a very strong consumer environment perhaps the strongest I've seen in my career," Cornell told analysts on a call Wednesday.
The retailer's shares are surging after reporting fiscal second-quarter results that beat on earnings, revenue and comparable store sales. Just when many investors have written off brick-and-mortar retailers in the era of Amazon, Target is seeing a huge jump in foot traffic.
"We're seeing a great consumer response ... unprecedented traffic. As we go back and look, we've never seen traffic growth like this," Cornell said Wednesday morning on CNBC's "Squawk Box."

If Target REALLY wants to make money, reverse your stupid gay-anything-goes bathroom policy so those of us that have been boycotting you might come back to your store!
While I want America to succeed, I HATE seeing enemies of We The People benefit as well. Jerks.
I guess that’s par for the course, though. I’ll take The Win!
Best. Election. Ever. EVER! MAGA!
Now watch the idiot vote democrat.
But was he pro-Hillary?
Democrat elites would crash the economy if they could - they ‘got theirs’ and don’t give a damn about the country - or the people who live here who aren’t ‘elites’...
A proud Target boycotter, am I
Yeah, well too bad Mr. Target CEO you’re not getting any of my $$ due to your idiotic bathroom rule.
I go food shopping at Target for a host of reasons beyond my control. In the past 3 or 4 months I have noticed that many of their shelves are empty and look like something out of the old Soviet Union. I go different days and different times so it’s not just a “not restocked yet” which you will see on a Sunday night. I first thought they might have a problem with paying their suppliers but now I think they are selling so much that it has played havoc with their economic order quantities.
...and it's without me or my $$$, now and forever.
Funny what happens when citizens are gifted with keeping more of their own hard earnings.
Thank you Mr. President.
Same here. I haven’t been in a Target since their bathroom decision.
I’ve never been in a Target but not necessarily because of political reasons. It just seems (from the outside) like a “Wal-Mart” kind of place and I hate shopping. I’m a “get it and get out” kind of guy so I prefer specialty stores as opposed to a general-merchandise kind of place. Even Home Depot and Best Buy aggravate me with their size and I almost never go into them.
Maybe they could give that idiot Dayton boy Mark a job sharpening pencils or fetching coffee now that they are doing so well . . .
#metoo
Maybe you’ll recover from letting freaks inside little girls bathrooms.
Target has long had issues keeping their shelves stocked. Everytime I go there they are out of something I need. (They aren’t actually out of it. They just haven’t re-stocked the shelves.) I end up having to go to another store after Target.
I finally started to just go to the other store first.
The credit Obama for it so yes, they will vote D.
Same here for my wife and me.
