Protesters on the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill campus on Monday night brought down a controversial monument dedicated to Confederate soldiers, according to media reports.
The Daily Tar Heel posted a series of photos and videos that showed protesters surrounding the monument and shrouding it in banners around 8 p.m. The monument was covered in a canvas that read For a World Without White Supremacy.
By about 9:30 p.m., protesters had toppled the monument, and began burying its head in dirt.
Police appeared to form a boundary around the statue and its empty pedestal a short time later, The Daily Tar Heel reported.
A student took credit earlier this year for dousing the monument with blood and red ink amid a national pushback to monuments that honor the Confederacy. Maya Little now faces criminal charges for defacing the statue. The Silent Sam statue was built on the UNC campus in 1913, but has emerged as a source of tension in recent years. UNC Chancellor Carol Folt told the News & Observer in April that while she believes the statue is detrimental to the university, it cannot be moved.
The fate of monuments honoring Confederate soldiers have become a hot-button issue in the wake of last year's violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va.
The "Unite the Right Rally" was planned in August 2017 in response to the city's plans to remove a state of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
A number of municipalities have moved to take down Confederate monuments following the rally, where a woman was killed when white nationalists clashed with counter-protesters.
President Trump, who drew widespread condemnation for his response to Charlottesville, opposed removing the statues, saying the removals amount to the "history and culture" of the United States "being ripped apart."
Yes.
At the time they were known as the Taliban but were in league with the US-funded Osama bin Laden.
We funded him because he was a "freedom fighter" against the Soviets.
With friends like OBL....
It’s like a malignant cancer.
You would have been helping them if given a chance....
This plus cleansing history books...history in the U.S.may start like 1963 or so.
If they choose the wrong house, they are dead. Choose wisely or die.
i don’t have a tv but it sounds about right
Basically agree, but Chapel Hill has always been a dim spot in the state to this NCSU grad.
Fox News just showed the monument being destroyed. About as many cops as anarchists were there. Cops looked to be there to stop anyone that would try to stop the criminal hordes from pulling it down. One cop had a big grin on his face. Not the first cop attempted to stop Silent Sam from being destroyed. We truly live in a nation without laws. The mob rules because liberal democrats have joined the mob. After Fox showed the monument being destroyed not a word was said from the law and order Fox & Friends hosts. Not a one of them said a word about the cops siding with lawbreakers to tear down another Confederate monument. No discussion at all about what they witnessed with their own eyes.
Our 'intelligence' people - A-holes like Brennan deep at work making the world a horror. The CIA - 'more confidence & arrogance than brains' group...
Every KKK and White Citizens thug in the old South was a Democrat... Maybe that’s why they’re ripping out the statues.. they don’t want the ‘black community’ to catch on to who they are...
You’re right - these people have the souls of book burners...
Most police chiefs on up are liberal ‘elites’... it’s why they’re promoted. Trump needs to change that...
Large universities are typically full of liberals and leftists, and the Research Triangle area has been a magnet for Yankees for many years.
I don’t think we want the President of the United States to have a say in who gets hired on a local police force.
While most of the time civilizations have been destroyed by invaders from the North this invasion is from the South.
Who would be suing whom?
We did not support OBL. We supported Masoud, his Afghan opponent, who the former had assassinated at a press conference. Suicide reporter.
But just for the sake of argument let's say the FBI decides they want to be able to move into large cities in emergencies - and ‘hit the ground running’... meaning they need people in local police forces ‘FBI trained’... something like a ‘top cop’ concept...
Then let's assume that someone like Peter Strzok is running the FBI - and choosing people of 'like mind' to work with him... and those people make similar choices with their staffs. A liberal/progressive/commie mentality becomes 'the culture'... and all that goes with with that culture. In short - over time it filters down to local police departments.
When Trump chooses conservatives for the FBI and encourages them to choose conservatives it will eventually effect the ranks. Same with conservative judges and the court system... Trump needs to choose carefully because five years down the road a person promoted to chief could likely be a conservative.
Remember Chief Moose who made a mess of the Beltway sniper investigation? Rumor had it that he was hired by the county in Maryland because of pressure from Hillary.
Re who would sue whom regarding the toppling of the Confederate statue?
The protestors would be sued for toppling/damaging it by whoever owned the statue - the university, a private foundation, a private donor, the state, alumni etc.
They could also be sued in a possibly new type of precedent case for “interfering with the First Amendment” rights (of free speech and EXPRESSION” because the statue told a story (expression does not have to be just in print or sound - art has been held to be a form of “expression” so destroying a work of art could be covered by the First Amendment).
It would make a great constitutional case and if America wins, then the Constitution is preserved re the 1st Amendment and all the Antifa/BLM/Black Bloc organizations could be sued under and charged with federal crimes.
Let me know what you think.
The police should be sued for “dereliction of duty”, if vandalism is a felony, then “Misprison of a felony” and “obstructing justice”, etc. Then they should be fired.
