THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
SO THIS IS VENICE
In 1924, Harry teamed with Edgar Leslie once again and also with Grant Clark for another hit. He stole the melody from an Italian folk tune, The Carnival of Venice, and with an able assist from Paul Whiteman, the man who made a lady out of jazz, created a great two-step number. Note the tubas supporting the bass line.

Sky Garden
August 18, 2018
He looked down from His holy height.
Psalm 102:19 nasb
While in London, a friend arranged for my wife Marlene and me to visit the Sky Garden. On the top floor of a thirty-five-story building in Londons business district, the Sky Garden is a glass-encased platform filled with plants, trees, and flowers. But the sky part captured our attention. We gazed down from a height of over 500 feet, admiring St. Pauls Cathedral, the Tower of London, and more. Our views of the capital city were breathtakingproviding a helpful lesson on perspective.
Our God has a perfect perspective of everything we experience. The psalmist wrote, For He looked down from His holy height; from heaven the Lord gazed upon the earth, to hear the groaning of the prisoner, to set free those who were doomed to death (Psalm 102:1920 nasb).
Like the hurting people pictured in Psalm 102, we are often locked into the present with its struggles, groaning with despair. But God sees our lives from beginning to end. Our Lord is never caught off guard by the things that can blindside us. As the psalmist anticipated, His perfect perspective will lead to an ultimate rescue that sets free even those doomed to death (vv. 20, 2728).
In difficult moments, remember: We may not know what is coming next, but our Lord does. We can trust Him with every moment that stretches before us.
Focusing on Christ puts everything else into perspective.
Altitude expands our field of view, not just our perspective. From the heights we can see things that are hidden from us when we are on the ground. This can be an analogy for Gods view of our life. God looks down from the heavens and sees us (Psalm 102:19). His view takes in both time and space; He sees the ends of the earth and the beginning and end of our lives.
How does knowing that God sees everything from beginning to end offer comfort?

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
SO THIS IS VENICE
This is a more conventional version of the tune. Note that the intro is once again in the minor key. Lombardo tuned some of his instruments a quarter tone sharp, which is how he got such an unusual effect from his winds.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
SEMINOLA
Success in the 1920s was measured by sales of sheet music and records. Player piano rolls were still a factor but not for much longer as radio and records replaced them. It was a significant break if a songwriter could get a song snapped up by a Broadway revue, and even better if he had enough output to have a Broadway show built around his material. At this time, Harry had one of his songs picked up by Florenz Ziegfeld, but major success on Broadway eluded him. In those days Broadway belonged to Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and George Gershwin.
Harry occupied a small niche at this time. In 1925 he teamed with Robert King for another hit. Today he would be accused of cultural appropriation, but in those days people were shameless about blacks and Indians. It was a different time and a different ethos. Note the tuba with its oom-pah bass line.

Yes, museum day. I always look forward to it even though the alarm clock goes off WAY to early. LOL! No telling what I’ll run across each week and that makes it fun. The camera will be in tow. :-)
Guess it’s time to shut this thing down and get a couple more things done, then hit the sack. I didn’t sleep well at all last night and am zonked. It looks like we’ll just get rain and no wild storms tonight so sleep should come easier.
Hope you have a good day tomorrow. Catch ya tomorrow evening.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
TOO MANY KISSES IN THE SUMMER
This would mark Harrys first teaming with Al Dubin and Billy Rose. Eventually, Harry and Al would become a major success as a team at Warner Brothers, and Billy would become a Broadway producer. This was another hit in 1926, and the melody is infectious. The pictures at the video are a hoot.
