HARRY WARREN
WHERE DO YOU WORK-A, JOHN?
One might think that a novelty item like this would be forgotten, even mercifully forgotten. But Louis Prima brought it back in the Fifties.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HARRY WARREN
ONE SWEET LETTER FROM YOU
It was 1927, and finally it was time for Harry Warren to shake hands with immortality. Ironically it was the only time Harry worked with lyricists Lew Brown and Sidney Clare. Everybody recorded this song in 1927, and it was recorded well into the modern jazz era.
This song features a taste of blues-oriented chords, something very new in Harrys output, which up to this time had been geared to Italian folk melodies. George Gershwin had no problem writing like this in the years after World War I thanks to afternoons spent at the Cotton Club once he dropped out of high school, but its a totally new sound for Harry. This is a fine down-and-dirty take on the song from a pro.

Kate Smith? Seriously? The Songbird of the South started out in 1927 singing something she wouldnt have dared sing years later. This is a look at the artist before she became Americas professional virgin vocalist. The Dixieland arrangement is just as interesting as her interpretation. This is one for the record books.

Good stuff! I find that I miss the static-y sound from needles on records. :)

They’re getting better and better at audio cleanup. Soon we’ll have digitally remastered recordings form the 1920s that sound like they came out of the studio last week.

It’s amazing what can be done. But authenticity will be a thing of the past, too. :)

Good evening, radu, and thanks for the video tunes for the troops.
Do I detect a “weather” theme? Can’t imagine why? d:o)

In her last years as a frequent guest on the Ed Sullivan Show, Sophie was a relentless self-parody, but in her prime in the 1920s, she was truly the Last of the Red Hot Mamas. This is a commanding performance.
