A Democratic poll of the Mississippi Senate special election shows former Rep. Mike Espy having a path to finishing first in a runoff this fall.
Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who was appointed earlier this year to replace longtime GOP Sen. Thad Cochran, is running for the remainder of his term this November. Candidates from all parties will run together on the same ballot, and if no one receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top-two finishers will advance to a late-November runoff.
In the poll conducted for the Espy campaign, Hyde-Smith finished first on the initial ballot with 29 percent. Espy was in second with 27 percent, followed by state Sen. Chris McDaniel at 17 percent. The Mellman Group surveyed 600 likely votes from Aug. 1-7, and the poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

But she should get as many votes as Wicker, right?
Is this the poll that is picking Clintoon to win the presidency again in November?
If that’s what they want, then so be it. Welfare for everyone!
And they wonder why most Americans hold modern "journalists" in utter contempt. This is propaganda pretending to be "news".
Just another criminal Dem on the take. Should have been jailed after his short stint as Agriculture Secretary for taking bribes and misusing taxpayer funds.
And Hillary Clinton has a 95% chance of winning.
The Republicans have a total percent of 46. The Demorat 27%.
This must be the new math according to the Demorats-how does 27% beat 46%?
They pulled it off in Alabama. But getting Gloria Allred into Mississippi against a woman candidate will be a tougher race.
MS is 37% black. What Espy has to do is peel off 20% of the white vote, vs the 10% the Dems are currently getting. I think MS must be the only state where the white vote is a mirror image of the black vote. If we could get whites in other states to vote like MS, we’d be able to rework the constitution to eliminate things like birthright citizenship and so on.
It’s a poll by the candidate himself, it’s garbage. I can’t believe this even warrants an article.
Republicans better get on the stick and turn out their voters!
Many Southern states have General Election Run Offs, if no candidate gets 50% +1, the top two move on, as here in GA when the next election would be early December. And Mississippi is no more electing a Dem US Senator than we are electing a Dem Governor.
Sure it does. In November of 2016 all the polls were crowing that Trump was done righ up to the early evening in f Election Day. Fool me once....
We can’t thank you enough for your “Get out the vote” piece that will rally Republicans.
With 2 Republicans running a runoff is very likely and Espy may even place first. But Espy should have little chance of winning.
It’s important that whichever Republican finishes third not be a little bitch and that he or she supports the nominee.
