PITTSBURGH (KDKA) The long-awaited state grand jury report into sexual abuse in six Pennsylvania dioceses, including Pittsburgh and Greensburg, has finally been released.
The 884-page document, two years in the making, shines a light into the dark corners of these dioceses going back seven decades, exposing the predators and the efforts of their bishops to protect them.
Today, the most comprehensive report on child sexual abuse within the church ever produced in our country was released, Attorney General Josh Shapiro said. Pennsylvanians can finally learn the extent of sexual abuse in these dioceses. For the first time, we can all begin to understand the systematic cover up by church leaders that followed. The abuse scarred every diocese. The cover up was sophisticated. The church protected the institution at all costs.
The report begins with the following statement:
We, the members of this grand jury, need you to hear this. We know some of you have head some of it before. There have been other reports about child sex abuse within the Catholic Church. But never on this scale. For many of us, those earlier stories happened someplace else, someplace away. Now we know the truth: it happened everywhere.
The report cites 301 priests, clergy and lay teachers with credible allegations against them. There are 99 in the Diocese of Pittsburgh alone.
Of those 99, a group of four groomed and violently sexually assaulted young boys, said Shapiro.
One boy was forced to stand on a bed in a rectory, strip naked and pose as Christ on the cross for the priests. They took photos of their victim, adding them to a collection of child pornography which they produced and shared on church grounds, Shapiro said.
Shapiro said the priests would mark their victims by giving them gifts.

While there may be some issues in other churches no where will you see the systemic cover up and protection of the guilty parties that you see in the Roman church
The Lutheran Church Missouri synod does not ordain women or the sexually perverted crowd. They also do not systemically cover up child sexual abuse
“Organized religion? Guaranteed in the constitution.”
Not if it is found to be involved in pedophilia or other criminal acts! The Constitution Guarantees only “Freedom of Religion!” It does not intend that we should allow any religious organization to physically harm our children. There’s another Amendment that guarantees that we are to be safe in our persons (Fourth Amendment).
To be fair, it’s not just the Catholics.
A retired Pentecostal preacher lives in my neighborhood. I always thought he behaved oddly and seemed kind of creeepy.
My intuition was correct. A few months ago, he was convicted of sexual assault against his step grandson. I don’t know how he managed it, but he didn’t serve much time in jail.
I agree that the Catholic Church has a huge problem. But no church is immune.
No, it was to be sacrificial and available to all in imitation of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Founder of the Church, Our Lord Jesus Christ was celibate, that is how.
Darn right. "Gay" == "Predator". Deal with it.
I'm starting to see your problem. You think some evil is OK, so long as the perverts in positions of power tell you so. You're the one actually defending evil people here. I made it clear at the outset that I want to see them ALL exposed and expunged. You? You want to protect them. You want to pretend that they're OK ... unless they're part of an organization that you already hate.
You don't get rid of a cockroach problem by only poisoning the roaches under the stove. You have to poison them ALL.
...according to Rome.
Luke 1:34-35 Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)
And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?
And then somehow teach THIS:
...I will NEVER know a man... ?
Face it, you worship evil men, in an evil organization.
Go ahead and deflect all you want. Some day you will be next to them in hell. Except, then you will realize they have jobs there.
"Whosoever lives; clothed in this Scapular; shall not suffer from the ravages of 'celibate' men."
You're a parody of yourself, completely blinded by your hate. At least you have exposed yourself, though.
Did you vote for Christine Hallquist?
Your ignorance is pathetic.
You have no clue about what you post.
The Church didn’t just shovel and shut up. It paid off, too. And some patents took the money. Those predator priests chose their victims well,
Elsie, I don’t know from whatever rock you crawled out from under, but you are a psycho! To spend the time ( and FR’s bandwidth) on the $hit you purvey, says to me that you need a straightjacket!
Your blindness is pathetic.
You have no clue about what you post.
As Pope Benedict predicted, the Church would undergo great trials, and emerge smaller - but much better - for it.
The Catholic Church does not make Pedophilia part of the religion. Individuals practice this perversion. Individuals need to be punished for it then. Conspiracies by groups of priests also need to be punished.
To ban the church would be unconstitutional
No one is saying that we should ban the Catholic Church. But, it should be made to pay for what it has and still is allowing to go on with it's “clergy.” Pedophilia may not be a part of Catholicism, but the Catholic Church has a responsibility to insure that their priests and other members of their paid clergy are not given a pass to protect it from prosecution. It is completely unnatural to attache celibacy to being a priest. So all too often, those positions are filled by men who are not normal sexually. So, in a manner of speaking, the Catholic Church, by it's rules for priests, sets itself up for these criminal acts against children. So while I don't presume to tell you what your church should do to prevent this kind of illegal behavior, I do expect our government to prosecute any and all who are guilty. Actually, if I were you, I'd demand that my church give a full accounting of it's behavior, or I'd say goodbye to it.
But the RC church cannot understand that raping children should be punished by prison. So it is not surprising that basic logic escapes RC apologists.
